Social Game Graphics: Art First, Story Later | Facebook Blog

One of the pressing issues faced by social game developers is to develop appropriate monetization strategies, and the focus on marketing the game has subsequently led to ignoring a very basic aspect of a game, which is its design. Despite high recommendations through friends, the visual impression remains predominant. The sensory registration in the brain is so quick that a player often does not realize the extent of its influence.

Considering the competition, especially with cross platforms that allow more access to other games, it?s about time Facebook app developers pay attention to the game design. They already have a strong platform to build on: Facebook, user engagement leads as the top social gaming platform on both PC and mobile. comScore ranks the social network as this year?s ?most engaging media property among US smartphone users.? Now with iOS 6 integration, Apple has given a direct invitation to app developers to take advantage of their mobile platforms for tablets and smartphone.

3D games such as GodsWar have become recently more popular, yet graphics are not about making all games into 3D because they are the very latest. Some games are best suited as 2 D and receive equally high ratings.

Engagement is a matter of individual taste, depending on genre and the amount of time dedicated to playing. That is why graphic presentation of a game is strongest contributing factor for game conversions, yet this aspect is often either overlooked or ignored during the game development process. The pressure to meet deadlines is one of the main reasons for this negligence. And incidentally, it is the graphic design that must be approved before creating a game?s functionalities. It is also the first element users encounter and majority base their decision entirely on the game?s graphics, which include the icon/logo, character appearance and environment setting.

Finally, game design is highly dependent on social demographics. Stats show there are as many females as male players on Facebook games and majority are educated adults. Targeting them requires a more complex integration between design and development. This calls for well-grounded research in the design process. For instance, RPGs now concentrate on providing characters that ?display? their temperament. Rovio?s Angry Birds ?look? angry. Most fantasy characters are more complex in nature, and it?s no longer a simple black and white portrayal of good or evil. Zynga too has modified their characters that relate more to the real world.

That makes up the story, which is wasted if the user does not give the game a try. And to try, graphics must be displayed perfectly.
