Breast Cancer Patient Favors Bill To Prevent Drug Shortages | NBC 4i

HILLIARD, Ohio --

Federal legislation could help ease the prescription drug shortage around the country, and a Hilliard woman said her own experience showed her the importance of passing the bill.

About one year ago, Sharon Brown was told that the breast cancer drug she was receiving at The James Cancer Center was in short supply.

Due to the shortage, her usual drug Taxol was going to be replaced with a different drug called Taxotere.

"Taxol was supposed to be the drug of choice. And when it came down to it, there wasn't enough," said Brown.

Sharon had a severe reaction to the new medication and ended up in the emergency room.

"It was horrible. I still have the neuropathy in my feet. It's getting better, but it's going to take awhile,? Sharon said. ?I just try not to think about it. It was horrible for two weeks.?

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is sponsoring new legislation, which recently passed in the U.S. Senate, that would allow pharmacists to repackage larger doses of medications and potentially ease the drug shortage. It would also require drug makers to report shortages to the Food and Drug Administration.

"Sometimes these shortages, we get notified the day before we're not able to get a supply. So by early notification to the FDA, they can really work to get other sources and maybe get other manufacturers to ramp up their supplies," said Ryan Forrey, Associate Director-Pharmacy and Infusion Services at OSU Wexner Medical Center.

Forrey said?they have?a list of 239 drugs that are in short supply. They must be creative in how they treat patients.

"We have two ways of dealing with it; looking at our supply and getting additional supplies in and then managing our use," explained Forrey.

Sharon Brown applauds the efforts of lawmakers to bring the drug shortage epidemic under control. She just completed her breast cancer treatments and hopes no one will live in fear of not getting treatment.

"I don't want anybody to have to go through what?I went through," said Brown.

Unemployment rate falls in two-thirds of US states

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The unemployment rate fell in two-thirds of U.S. states last month, evidence that modest economic growth is boosting hiring in most areas of the country.

And in many states, unemployment has fallen well below the national average, which was 8.1 percent last month. The rate was under 7 percent in 22 states in April. That compares with only 13 states in April 2011.

The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate dropped in 37 states in April, the most in three months. Unemployment rose in 5 states and was unchanged in eight.

Nationally, the unemployment rate has fallen a full percentage point since August. Employers have added a million jobs over the past five months, though the pace of hiring slowed in March and April.

The national rate has also declined because some people gave up looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively looking for a job.

The states with the lowest unemployment continue to be in the upper Midwest with small populations. North Dakota's rate was 3 percent in April, the lowest in the country. It was followed by Nebraska at 3.9 percent and South Dakota at 4.3 percent.

Still, unemployment is also relatively low in some large states, such as Minnesota and Virginia. Both had a 5.6 percent unemployment rate in April.

The rate has fallen by a full percentage in Minnesota during past 12 months. In Virginia, it has dropped half a point in that timeframe.

Texas, the nation's second-largest state, also has low unemployment. The rate dropped to 6.9 percent last month, down from 8 percent a year ago. Texas has added almost 250,000 jobs in the past year, the most in the nation.

The rate was 5 percent in Oklahoma, 5.1 percent in Iowa, 5 percent in New Hampshire, and 6.3 percent in Massachusetts.

Many of those states have seen job gains. Iowa added 5,800 jobs in April, while Nebraska gained 3,800. Indiana added the most jobs of any state last month, with 17,100.

Overall, 32 states added jobs in April, the department said.

Still, other states continue to struggle.

Nevada reported the highest unemployment rate in the nation, at 11.7 percent. Rhode Island was next at 11.2 percent, followed by California at 10.9 percent.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Facebook's public stock offering this week is projected to generate between $1.6 billion and $2.1 billion through mid-2013 for California's budget as shareholders cash in their shares.

The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office on Tuesday increased the state's revenue projection after the online social network raised the upper range of its initial stock price from $35 per share to $38.

The analyst's report says Facebook is expected to drive one-fifth of the growth in California's personal income this year.

Anthropologists discover earliest form of wall art

Anthropologists working in southern France have determined that a 1.5 metric ton block of engraved limestone constitutes the earliest evidence of wall art. Their research, reported in the most recent edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows the piece to be approximately 37,000 years old and offers rich evidence of the role art played in the daily lives of Early Aurignacian humans.

The research team, comprised of more than a dozen scientists from American and European universities and research institutions, has been excavating at the site of the discovery?Abri Castanet?for the past 15 years. Abri Castanet and its sister site Abri Blanchard have long been recognized as being among the oldest sites in Eurasia bearing artifacts of human symbolism. Hundreds of personal ornaments have been discovered, including pierced animal teeth, pierced shells, ivory and soapstone beads, engravings, and paintings on limestone slabs.

"Early Aurignacian humans functioned, more or less, like humans today," explained New York University anthropology professor Randall White, one of the study's co-authors. "They had relatively complex social identities communicated through personal ornamentation, and they practiced sculpture and graphic arts."

Aurignacian culture existed until approximately 28,000 years ago.

In 2007, the team discovered an engraved block of limestone in what had been a rock shelter occupied by a group of Aurignacian reindeer hunters. Subsequent geological analysis revealed the ceiling had been about two meters above the floor on which the Aurignacians lived?within arms' reach.

Using carbon dating, the researchers determined that both the engraved ceiling, which includes depictions of animals and geometric forms, and the other artifacts found on the living surface below were approximately 37,000 years old.

"This art appears to be slightly older than the famous paintings from the Grotte Chauvet in southeastern France," explained White, referring to the cave paintings discovered in 1994.

"But unlike the Chauvet paintings and engravings, which are deep underground and away from living areas, the engravings and paintings at Castanet are directly associated with everyday life, given their proximity to tools, fireplaces, bone and antler tool production, and ornament workshops."

He added that this discovery, combined with others of approximately the same time period in southern Germany, northern Italy, and southeastern France, raises new questions about the evolutionary and adaptive significance of art and other forms of graphic representation in the lives of modern human populations.

Obama talks '50 Shades,' Kim K. on 'The View'

For the second time since taking office, President Barack Obama sat down for a chat with the ladies of ?The View,? and The Clicker got a live look at the taping (the episode itself airs Tuesday).

Squeezing in the appearance between giving the commencement speech at Barnard College and delivering remarks at Ricky Martin's fundraiser in New York, the president dove right into campaign issues such as gay marriage and the current JP Morgan Chase debacle. But later in the show, Obama switched gears and gamely took part in a pop-culture quiz, proving that even the president stays a little dialed in to what people are buzzing about.

President Obama drops by "The View" for a pop culture quiz. And in other news, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews flexes his mental muscles on "Jeopardy."

Asked which Kardashian recently got married, Obama answered correctly, saying it was Kim, but qualifying that he only knew ?because it was to a ball player.?

As for what sexy book was sweeping the nation, he wasn?t aware of ?50 Shades of Grey,? and said he?d have to check with wife Michelle about that one. Although the president doesn't have a lot of free time on his hands, he's able to catch a movie now and again: ?Avengers? was recently on the viewing schedule, he revealed.

And if you thought Obama?s brief rendition of ?Let?s Stay Together? last January was forgotten, not to worry. It got some play during the broadcast too. While the first family appreciates his singing (Obama said his daughter Malia referred to him as ?just the right amount of embarrassing,?) he assured the audience that the clip is not anyone?s ringtone, at least in his family.

By a margin of 63 percent disapproval to 33 percent approval, respondents rejected a?description of the deal that will include a US troop presence and?billions of dollars in monetary support for Afghan forces in the?decade after 2014, according to a Monitor/TIPP poll conducted April 27?to May 4.

Unusually for a key issue facing Americans in an election year, the lack?of support was bipartisan, showing only small differences across the ideological spectrum. However, with few national politicians?dissenting on the broad outlines of the Afghanistan policy, the popular?unhappiness has few immediately discernable political consequences.

Some of the polling was done before Mr. Obama had a chance to outline?his case for the deal in a national televised address on May 1, the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

In that address, Obama presented the partnership as enabling a?withdrawal of most US forces by 2014 while still safeguarding?Afghanistan in the long-term from a return of Al Qaeda.

?The agreement we signed today sends a clear message to the Afghan?people: As you stand up, you will not stand alone,? said Obama.??Within this framework, we will work with the Afghans to determine?what support they need to accomplish two narrow security missions?beyond 2014: counterterrorism and continued training.?

Under the 10-year agreement, US forces would have access to Afghan?bases beyond 2014 for training Afghans and hunting Al Qaeda. The US commits to ask Congress annually to help pay for Afghanistan?s?security forces, whose cost outstrips the country?s budget.

The agreement does not spell out US troop numbers or dollar figures.?However, estimates for the yearly cost of sustaining the Afghan forces envisioned after 2014 are upwards of $4 billion. US and Afghan?officials have suggested the US will pay several billion dollars a?year annually, with the rest coming from the Afghans and from NATO?partners.

In his address, Obama conceded Americans were tired of the war.??Others will ask why we don?t leave immediately. That answer is also?clear: we must give Afghanistan the opportunity to stabilize.?Otherwise our gains could be lost, and Al Qaeda could establish itself?once more.?

Since the summer of 2010, however, tracking polls from the Pew?Research Center show a majority of Americans want US troops to come home from Afghanistan ?as soon as possible? rather than stay ?until the?situation is stabilized.? Pew?s most recent poll in mid-April found a?60 to 32 split for leaving now.?That split resembles closely the new Monitor/TIPP poll on the?strategic partnership deal.

Respondents in the TIPP poll were asked: ?The US plans to remove most American forces?from Afghanistan by 2014. To help Afghanistan after 2014, the US will?sign a 10-year deal that keeps some US troops there and the US will?also spend several billion dollars a year on the Afghan military. Do?you approve or disapprove of such US involvement in Afghanistan beyond?2014??

Among Democrats, 13 percent strongly approved, 17 percent somewhat?approved, 19 percent somewhat disapproved, and 46 percent strongly disapproved. Among Republicans, the percentages skewed only slightly?more positive, 15, 22, 20, and 38, respectively. For independents, the?percentages were 12, 21, 15, and 49.

The margin of error was plus/minus 3.3 percentage points.

Few discernible trends were noted between races, genders, or types of?hometown. Older Americans were substantially more likely to strongly disapprove of the deal. Cohorts under age 45 registered strong?disapproval in the 30 percent range, while more than 50 percent of?those over 45 strongly disapproved.

Such broad dissent raises questions about whether the president has a?democratic mandate to commit the US to a long-term deal. But the most contentious issues ? troop numbers and dollar figures ? will involve?consulting Congress.

Despite its unpopularity, America?s longest war has not stirred the?intensity of passions that surrounded the Iraq war. Only small numbers?have taken protests into the streets, with expressions of dissent?mostly limited to social media efforts from groups like Rethink?Afghanistan.

War protesters and members of the Occupy movement are planning to converge on Chicago ahead of a NATO?summit on Afghanistan scheduled for May 20. At that summit, the US will ask its NATO partners to commit to covering some of the costs of?Afghan security forces post-2014.

Despite a picture posted to photographer friend Terry Richardson's blog with the caption "showing off her new engagement ring," Lady Gaga is single.

One can see how confusion might arise, but rest assured, our girl is really not engaged to recent ex Taylor Kinney or anyone else for that matter.

Richardson, whose job is apparently to produce viral content like Lindsay Lohan pics or the Kate Upton "Cat Daddy" video, posted the photo on Sunday.

The two have been collaborating on a new book of Lady Gaga photos, which is how this image - of her showing off a massive diamond ring - came to be.

Gaga and Kinney (The Vampire Diaries, Chicago Fire) had been dating for the better part of a year, but reportedly broke up for good a few weeks back.

No Tablet News Yet From Nokia, But It Is Launching Its E-Reader Reading App

There are still some big question marks over what Nokia plans to do in tablets -- a market where it is now possibly the only major smartphone maker yet to make a device -- but at least Nokia is moving ahead with the launch of tablet-friendly services. Today, it said it would begin the global roll-out of Nokia Reading, a Windows Phone app originally announced back in February for reading e-books on a Lumia device. The company says that initial countries that will get the app are France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK, with others following later this year. It is compatible with all four Lumia models: the 900, 800, 710 and 610.

Foxconn Chief Confirms The Apple iTV

In an interview published by China Daily today, Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn, confirms the massive manufacturing company is making preparations for an Apple television set called iTV. Gou also states that neither development nor manufacturing has begun. Apparently, per China Daily at least, the television set will have an aluminum construction, Siri voice controls and FaceTime video calling. This is the most solid report to date of the long-fabled Apple HDTV. The product has been rumored for the last several years. So far both Steve Jobs and now Tim Cook have called the Apple TV, the company's set-top box, a hobby. But it seems the company is almost ready to turn its avocation into an occupation.
