Advertising Bans Work: Quebec Has Lowest Childhood Obesity Rate

June 29th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Care2?..

?Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions in a sesame seed bun?? I can still remember the jingle, word for word, from being exposed to those Big Mac commercials as a child. But does childhood exposure to fast food advertising have an impact beyond giving us a horrible ear worm for life? Recent research suggests that it does.

The province of Quebec in Canada has the lowest childhood obesity rates in the country despite having one of the most sedentary lifestyles. How is that possible? A study by Tirtha Dhar and Kathy Baylis found that Quebec?s 32 year ban on advertising to children led to an estimated:

- US $88 million annual reduction in expenditures on fast food
- 13.4 billion to 18.4 billion fewer fast food calories being consumed per year

The study also found that patterns established in childhood carried into adulthood, with French speaking young adults in Quebec being 38% less likely to purchase fast food than French speaking young adults in Ontario (where there is no advertising ban).

Parents should ?just say no?

This study provides further proof that advertising works. It also demonstrates that parents whose children are constantly begging for fast food (after being exposed to ads) end up purchasing fast food more frequently than parents whose children are not exposed to advertising. Many people say that those parents should ?just say no? and take some personal responsibility. Perhaps that is true, but is that the best we can do as a society?

Senate bill brings some big changes to farm policy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Briefly putting election-year politics aside, the Senate on Thursday moved toward strong approval of legislation assuring that farmers hit by bad times will be protected and that millions of others hurt by the bad economy won't go hungry.

The Senate is expected to show bipartisan support for the $500 billion bill that sets farm safety net and conservation policies and funds the food stamp program over the next five years. The vote will come after lawmakers finish the final eight of more than 70 amendments the Senate is considering as part of the 1,000-page bill.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky opened Thursday's session by praising the Senate's recent successes in getting bills passed. McConnell said they were "getting back to operating the way the Senate traditionally has."

The bill goes next to the House, where there's less enthusiasm for it among conservative Republicans. The House Agriculture Committee has delayed a vote on the farm bill until July 11, and it's uncertain when the full House will vote. The 2008 farm bill expires at the end of September.

One issue the Senate left unresolved that the House will have to consider is a division between northern and southern farmers over safety nets.

The Senate bill makes major changes in past practices, eliminating direct payments to farmers regardless of whether they plant a crop and replacing the payments with greater emphasis on crop insurance and a new revenue protection plan that compensates farmers for minor losses until crop insurance kicks in.

Northern and Midwestern corn and soybean farmers support the change, but southern rice and peanut farmers, who have relied more heavily on direct payments and a target price subsidy that would also be eliminated, are looking to the House to keep at least some parts of the old system.

Senate supporters say the changes to the subsidy programs will save $15 billion over the next 10 years. The entire bill, with savings to conservation programs and food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, would save the treasury $23 billion over that period.

The Senate bill also limits subsidy payments to those with adjusted gross income of less than $750,000, half the current ceiling, and caps payments at $50,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a couple. An amendment approved Wednesday would also reduce by 15 percentage points the taxpayer share of crop insurance premiums for those with incomes of more than $750,000. The government now pays an average 62 percent of crop insurance premiums.

The bill also ends payments to "farm managers," sometimes wealthy people who may have an interest in a farm but don't live on the property or actively engage in farming.

Food stamps continue to command the great majority of farm bill dollars. Spurred by the bad economy, there are now 46 million people getting food stamps, at a cost of about $80 billion a year. That's 80 percent of the entire farm bill budget.

The farm bill does make an effort to end abuse or misuse of SNAP benefits. Lottery winners and college students being supported by their non-low-income families no longer qualify. The bill cracks down on benefit trafficking, prevents liquor and tobacco stores from accepting food stamps and closes a loophole in which some states give as little as $1 a year in heating assistance to people, even when they don't have heating bills, to increase their food stamp benefits. That saves about $4 billion over 10 years, a tiny part of the $770 billion the program is expected to spend, and senators rejected amendments that would have made deeper cuts in the program.

The measure also differs from past farm bills in paying more attention to what are called specialty crops, mainly fruits and vegetables. It expands block grants to states to support research and promotion of specialty crops, assists organic farmers and expands support for farmers' markets and programs that help get healthy foods to low-income areas.

Still, there are numerous groups that say the bill doesn't go far enough in casting off old farm bill habits. The conservative Club for Growth said it still asserts too much government control in the private sector. The public interest advocacy group U.S. PIRG said the bill "will continue the current practice of disproportionately subsidizing the largest agribusinesses, who are already profitable and don't need taxpayer handouts."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., long a watchdog for special interest projects included in highway and farm bills, noted that the bill doesn't change the program that protects sugar growers from foreign competition and creates a new $3 billion program for cotton growers. He said there is also money in the bill to improve the U.S. sheep industry, study the health benefits of peas and lentils and plant trees in urban parks.

Among the final amendments taken up Thursday was one by Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., that would have barred the Environmental Protection Agency from conducting any aerial surveillance over agriculture operations. It fell four votes short of the 60 needed for passage. It was recently falsely reported that the EPA was using drones to spy on cattle ranchers in Nebraska.

Keeping Our Children's Hearts: Raising Teens ? Part 2

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or follow me on Facebook. Thanks for visiting!

By Contributing Writer, Candace

If you missed Part 1, you can click here to catch up.

In Part 1, I shared with you the joys of raising our teen girls.? I think it?s important to talk about the joys of teens because often our culture?says that the teen years will be difficult and should be feared.? You?ve heard it before, ?Just wait until they?re teens!?? So encouraging to new parents, right?

If you are parents to little ones, don?t be afraid!? Pray that God will give you the wisdom to shepherd your children into God-fearing teens, and then adults.? If you?re parents to teens already, enjoy them.? Talk with them and?pray for them continually!? ?If you have a teen who has rebelled, pray that God would turn his/her heart around, and trust that He is in control and?has a purpose for their lives.

No matter how perfect we may perceive a family to be, we all have the same thing in common.??It?s?called our sin nature.? None of us are immune from it, so we can all expect some tough spots along the way.

I?ll share what we?ve learned?thus far and focus on those day-to-day tough spots: those days when hormones are getting the best of them, or they question your decisions, or think you?re being unfair.? ? Here are some practical ways to deal with those tough spots:

Be understanding.

Hormones can get the best of all of us. But hopefully, as we get older and mature in Christ, we?re able to exercise more self-control.? We need to be compassionate when our teen doesn?t wake up?on the right side of the bed. Just like I want my kids to extend grace to me when I?m not in the greatest of moods, I must extend the same grace to them. This doesn?t excuse crossing the line of?disrespect?we must all exhibit Christ-like hearts, but we can give grace on those hormonally off days.? I?m so thankful my kids love and forgive me on my off days.

Put on then, as God?s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience?? Colossians 3:12

Pick your battles wisely.

I don?t know about you, but I?ve always hated this term! After all, I?m the parent, and I certainly don?t want my kids battling me so much that I must start picking which ones to fight. However, there are situations when I might not agree with my teen, yet, their desire, method,?or request is not wrong or sinful (obviously, sin must be dealt with).

For example, my younger teen loves to cook! I am grateful! However, she cooks rather slowly and makes quite a mess while doing it. I used to walk in the kitchen and either ask her why she wasn?t finished yet, or criticize the mess. I began to see the discouragement on her face and realized I was worried more about the mess than her service to our family! I decided to just stay out of her way and let her do her thing in her own time and in her own way. She knows that when she is finished, she must clean up. She?s also learned how much time she needs to complete a meal or bake something and is careful to allot herself that time.? She?s a fabulous cook!

If I had continued to oversee?her?in the kitchen, critiquing her every move, she would see meal time as a burden and not a joy.? As long as?sin is not involved, and it won?t hurt others, be willing to let some things go.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.? James 3:17

Compromise.

As we?re raising our children, we want them to?develop intelligent minds that can think for themselves.? This is good. We want our children to think for themselves and question things that don?t seem right.? Until that is?.they start questioning US!? I often laugh during these times, thinking that I miss when they were little?when they shared all?our same opinions and thought?we hung the moon.? But when we raise them to be logical thinkers, they enjoy debating quite a bit.? Our family rule has always been that if you don?t agree with a decision or don?t understand something, you are free to respectfully ask questions or state your case.? Once the?debate turns heated, it?s over.? One thing we must not do is find ourselves arguing with our teens (we?have been?guilty of this).? But when a respectful debate ensues, we are happy to listen, and have often compromised based on their ability to articulate their position.

When I say compromise, I am not talking about compromising God?s word, our values, or standards.?? These compromises may?come in the form of: staying up later on a school night for a particular reason, or extending curfew a bit because of a special outing or function, or agreeing on a fair amount of time to spend on the computer, iTouch, video games,?etc.? Sometimes, we as parents, can be so quick to say no, or stand firm?on our black and white rules, that we?re not willing to just listen and?try to compromise.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.? Matthew 5:9

They will make mistakes.

This has been a difficult area for me, personally. I made so many mistakes as a teenager, that I want to do whatever I can to prevent mine from making the same ones. This partially entails me being open about my teenage years so that they understand where I?m coming from. However, I tend to take that into areas that aren?t that big a deal and expect them to heed my every warning.? I?ve been known to get offended when they don?t take my word for it.? But I?m learning that there are some areas in which they must learn on their own.? And that?s okay!

Our teens will make mistakes just like we did when we were their age?.and still do.? But we must weigh those?decisions against real sin.? We certainly don?t want to send them out ill-equipped and expect them to always make the right decisions, but if they have been equipped, then allow them to make decisions that you may not necessarily see as wise, so that they can learn from them.

Though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.? Psalm 37:24

Be quick to forgive.

No matter how many times we may be unhappy with each other, or have spats, we are always quick to forgive.? There?s nothing worse than a parent who stays mad at you for days on end, or treats you like they don?t love you because you made a mistake. We all make mistakes. Forgive quickly and restore fellowship between you and your teen.

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.?

Ephesians 4:32

Allow the Holy Spirit to work in them.

When you?ve raised your child?in the Lord, and they have a relationship with Him, there comes a point when we have to trust that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide them.? Easier said than done.? There was no harder time to practice this than when Cheyenne and Nathan were courting and engaged.? For us, though we viewed Cheyenne as a mature adult, this was our first experience down this road.? On one hand, we trusted their intentions and commitment towards purity.? On the other hand, temptation can get the best of us, especially when we?re young and very in love!

We did have fairly strict guidelines in place during their courtship, but my husband brought much needed balance to the process.? He was much better at discerning situations that were?necessary to allow the Holy Spirit to guide, and which ones required more parental guidance for our daughter.

But there are many situations that our teens will face that will allow the Holy Spirit to guide.? Teens are surrounded by a?general decline of moral standards, and we can?t follow them around every second or keep them locked up.? This is when we must trust God, and the work He does through the Holy Spirit!

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.? John 14: 26

A Nokota horse breed. | *A blog for Pets*

The Nokota horse developed in the southwestern corner of North Dakota, in the Little Missouri River Badlands. Feral horses were first
encountered by ranchers in the 19th century, and horses from domestic herds mingled with the original feral herds.

Ranchers often crossbred local Indian ponies, Spanish horses from the southwest, and various draft, harness, Thoroughbred and stock horses to make hardy, useful ranch horses.

Theodore Roosevelt, who ranched in the Little Missouri area between 1883 and 1886, wrote:
In a great many ?indeed in most? localities there are wild horses to be found, which, although invariably of domestic descent, being either themselves runaways from some ranch or Indian outfit, or else claiming such for their sires and dams, yet are quite as wild as the antelope on whose domain they have intruded.
In 1884, the HT Ranch, located near Medora, North Dakota, bought 60 mares from a herd of 250 Native American-bred horses originally confiscated from the Lakota leader Sitting Bull and sold at Fort Buford, North Dakota in 1881.

Some of these mares were bred to the Thoroughbred racing stallion Lexington, also owned by the HT Ranch.

By the early 20th century, the feral horse herds became the target of local ranchers looking to limit grazing competition for their livestock. Many horses were rounded up, and either used as ranch horses, sold for slaughter or shot.

From the 1930s through the 1950s, federal and state agencies worked with ranchers to remove horses from western North Dakota. However, when Theodore Roosevelt National Park was established in the 1940s, during construction, a few bands of horses were accidentally enclosed within the Park fence, and by 1960 these bands were the last remaining feral horses in North Dakota.

Nonetheless, the park sought to eliminate these horses. The National Park Service was declared exempt from the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 that covered free-roaming horses and burros on other federal lands.

This allowed them to view the herds as nuisances and deal with them as such, including sending many to slaughter.

Nokota horse breed United StatesIn the late 1970s, growing public opposition to the removal of feral horses prompted management strategy changes, and today the herds within the Theodore Roosevelt National Park are managed for the purposes of historical demonstration.

However, in 1986 the park added outside bloodlines with the aim of modifying the appearance of the Nokota. Park management felt that the horses created with the outside bloodlines would sell better at subsequent auctions.

The dominant herd stallions were removed and replaced with two feral stallions from Bureau of Land Management Mustang herds, a crossbred Shire stallion, a Quarter Horse stallion and an Arabian stallion. At the same time that the stallion replacements took place, a large number of horses from the park were rounded up and sold at auction.

At the 1986 auction, concerned about the welfare of the Nokota horse, Leo and Frank Kuntz purchased 54 horses, including the dominant stallion, a blue roan. This was in addition to smaller numbers of horses purchased in 1981, 1991 and 1997.

After researching the history of the breed, the Kuntzs stated that they had found evidence that the horses in the park were probably related to the remaining horses from the band of 250 Sitting Bull horses, who had been range-bred by the Marquis de Mores, who founded the town of Medora.

However, the short-lived Nokota Horse Association claimed that there was no evidence for this claim.
The Nokota horse is a feral and semi-feral horse breed located in the badlands of southwestern North Dakota in the United States.

The breed developed in the 19th century from foundation bloodstock consisting of ranch-bred horses produced from the horses of local Native Americans mixed with Spanish horses, Thoroughbreds, harness horses and related breeds.

The Nokota was almost wiped out during the early 20th century when ranchers, in cooperation with state and federal agencies, worked together to reduce competition for livestock grazing. However, when Theodore Roosevelt National Park was created in the 1940s, a few bands were inadvertently trapped inside, and thus were preserved.

In 1986, the park sold off a large number of horses, including herd stallions, and released several stallions with outside bloodlines into the herds. At this point, brothers Leo and Frank Kuntz began purchasing the horses with the aim of preserving the breed, and in 1999 started the Nokota Horse Conservancy, later beginning a breed registry through the same organization.

Later, a second, short-lived, registry was begun by another organization in Minnesota. In 2009, the North Dakota Badlands Horse Registry was created, which registers the slightly different type of horses which have been removed from the park in recent years.

Today, the park conducts regular thinning of the herd to keep numbers between 70 and 110, and the excess horses are sold off.

The Nokota horse has an angular frame, is commonly blue roan in color, and often exhibits an ambling gait called the "Indian shuffle". The breed is generally separated into two sections, the traditional and the ranch type, which differ slightly in conformation and height.

They are used in many events, including endurance riding, western riding and English disciplines.

Nokota horse breedThe Nokota horse has an angular frame with prominent withers, a sloped croup, and a low set tail.

Members of the breed are often blue roan, which is a color rare in other breeds, although black and gray are also common. Other, less common, colors include red roan, bay, chestnut, dun, grullo and palomino.

Pinto patterns such as overo and sabino occur occasionally. There are two general types of the Nokota horse. The first is the traditional Nokota, known by the registry as the National Park Traditional.

They tend to be smaller, more refined, and closer in type to the Colonial Spanish Horse, and generally stand between 14 and 14.3?hands (56 and 59?inches, 142 and 150?cm) high.

The second type is known as the ranch-type or National Park Ranch, more closely resemble early "foundation type" Quarter Horses, and generally stand from 14.2 to 17?hands (58 to 68?inches, 147 to 173?cm).
More horses
Members of the breed often exhibit an ambling gait, once known as the "Indian shuffle." Nokota horses are described as versatile and intelligent. Members of the breed have been used in endurance racing and western riding, and a few have been used in events such as fox hunting, dressage, three day eventing and show jumping.

Sources vary on the etymology of the breed's name, with one source stating that the Nokota derives its name from the Nakota people who inhabited North and South Dakota, while another says that the name was a combination of North Dakota created by the Kuntz brothers.

Troops face administrative punishment for Quran burning

By NBC News' Courtney Kube

The U.S. military has recommended administrative punishments, but no criminal charges, for as many as seven troops involved in the burning of Muslim holy books at a NATO base in Afghanistan that sparked deadly clashes.

A military official told NBC News that a classified investigation into how service members burned copies of the Quran earlier this year is now complete.

The investigation made its way to the Pentagon a few days ago and is now in the hands of the service branch chiefs for review.

The investigative report recommends that U.S. Army soldiers and at least one U.S. Navy sailor receive the punishment -- likely a letter of reprimand or a drop in rank and pay -- for their roles in the book burnings.

As many as 12 service members were involved in the chain of events that led to the burning of the religious materials, the military official said, adding that more punishments could be coming.

At least one of the soldiers involved is an officer, the official told NBC News.?

None of the names of the military members involved have been released.

The burning took place in February when several Qurans were thrown in the garbage and then sent to the burn pit for?incineration. The actions set off days of violent riots throughout Afghanistan.

The incident tapped into anti-foreign sentiment fueled by a popular perception that foreign troops disrespect Afghan culture and Islam.

NATO later apologized for the burning of the holy texts.

Hispanic advocacy group weighs in on President's immigration shift

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Many are still talking about the President's new immigration policy, calling it an unprecedented move.

The policy will stop the deportation of some young illegal immigrants. It's a decision Hispanic advocate Hilda Mary Esquerra said is a step forward for the Latin community.

"I think it's a very positive move to help the dozens of these kids that are in the United States," Esquerra said.? "They fear of being deported any minute and this brings a lot of relief for them and their families to be able to pursue their dreams and serve this wonderful country they call home."

Under the new policy, people younger than 30 years old who came to the United States before they were 16 years old, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation.

"What this administration is trying to do is keep people in this nation that are trying and making a contribution to our country," said WAFF 48 Legal Analyst Mark McDaniel.? "They are getting an education. They would be valuable according to the administration in our work force that they can help our society out."

?The policy change is expected to potentially affect between 800,000 and more than 1-million people.

Esquerra said this change could promote a rise in scammers again immigrants.?

Iphone App Dev iOS 5 Concept UI Improvements cool

Rating: 4

In this video, I demonstrate three simple UI tweaks to iOS that really improve functionality and use. 1. Wi-Fi Selection. Instead of a alert-style dialog prompting you to choose a network (you must decide what to do at that moment before moving on), a Wi-Fi banner appears, prompting you that there are available networks to connect to. Simply tap the banner to go to settings, or swipe down to easily connect to a network, WITHOUT EXITING your app. This same kind of notification style can be put to use for other alerts, such as low battery. Ultimately, the main goal of this tweak is to eliminate the modal, interrupting alert all together for iOS system functions (battery, WiFi, SIM card, etc). 2. Popovers. A simple iPad UI design that now appears on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Instead of context menus taking you away from your current window, all actions can now be performed within the popover. For example, printing. Reading lists can also be handled this way. But this doesn?t just apply to Safari. Any menu in any app that allows you to perform more actions appears as a popover. 3. Landscape Multitasking. Your thumbs will be on the right and left of the device, no matter how you hold the phone. Reflected infrared light unveils never-before-seen details of Renaissance paintings

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? When restoring damaged and faded works of art, artists often employ lasers and other sophisticated imaging techniques to study intricate details, analyze pigments, and search for subtle defects not visible to the naked eye. To refine what can be seen during the restoration process even further, a team of Italian researchers has developed a new imaging tool that can capture features not otherwise detectable with the naked eye or current imaging techniques.

The system, known as Thermal Quasi-Reflectography (TQR), is able to create revealing images using reflected light from the mid-infrared part of the spectrum (3-5 micrometers in wavelength). Researchers from the University of L'Aquila, the University of Verona, and Italy's National Institute of Optics in Florence successfully demonstrated the TQR system on two famous works of art: the Zavattari frescos in the Chapel of Theodelinda and "The Resurrection" by the Italian Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca. The researchers detail their work in a paper published June 18 in the Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Optics Express.

Thermography, the traditional infrared imaging technique in this part of the spectrum (greater than 3 micrometers) detects subtle temperature differences due to the pigmentation on the surface of paintings. These thermal maps can be used during art restoration to reveal internal defects that are not evident in visible light.

In contrast, the TQR imaging system uses a very different tactic and doesn't detect heat emitted from paintings at all; in fact it tries to minimize it: The TQR system shines a faint mid-infrared light source onto the surface of the painting and records the light that is reflected back to a camera.

"This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time that this technique has been applied on artworks," said Dario Ambrosini of the University of L'Aquila in Italy, one of the paper's authors. "This novel method represents a powerful yet safe tool for artwork diagnostics." All objects emit some infrared radiation. Depending on their temperature, certain materials shine more brightly in one wavelength than in others. At normal room temperature (20? C or 68? F), paintings typically emit more energy in the longer infrared wavelengths (42 percent) than they do in the mid-infrared (1.1 percent).

To take advantage of this weak mid-IR emission, the researchers applied the basic tools of thermography and ran them in reverse. Since the painting would not normally shine brightly in the mid-IR, the researchers used under-powered halogen lamps as very simple yet effective sources of mid-IR radiation. To measure only the reflected light, special care had to be taken to prevent the lamp from heating the surface of the painting and to exclude all other potential sources of mid-IR radiation.

The researchers developed the TQR system to find a thermal imaging tool capable of better differentiating materials in a painted surface. The mid-infrared has advantages over other wavelengths in this regard. It also has better contrast and produces sharper images than studies in the far-infrared, and can detect features not seen in the near-infrared (NIR) with wavelength less than approximately 2 micrometers.

In its first test on a small section of the Zavattari frescos in the Chapel of Theodelinda, the TQR system revealed details that were missed by earlier optical and near-infrared studies. "Our system easily identified old restorations in which missed gold decorations were simply repainted," said lead author Claudia Daffara of the University of Verona. "The TQR system was also much better at visualizing armor on some of the subjects in the fresco."

To further evaluate the potential, the TQR system also studied a painting known as "The Resurrection" by Piero della Francesca. The TQR system identified interesting features, such as highly reflective retouches from previous restorations, all while operating during normal museum hours without interruption. The most surprising feature was an area around a soldier's sword that was painted by using two different fresco techniques. This subtle distinction was not detected by NIR photography.

"For mural paintings the use of the mid-infrared regions reveals crucial details," said Daffara. "This makes TQR a promising tool for the investigation of these artworks."

The researchers are currently conducting tests to determine if the TQR system can also provide infrared spectra of the surface of paintings, which may be able to identify the pigments used. "Determining the chemical makeup of the pigments is important in determining how best to protect and restore the artwork," said Ambrosini. And they note that TQR may have applications beyond art preservation. "In principle, it should work whenever we desire to differentiate surface materials," said Ambrosini.

Portugal Beats Netherlands 2-1 At Euro 2012: Cristiano Ronaldo Scores Twice

KHARKIV, Ukraine -- Cristiano Ronaldo finally found the form he was lacking at the European Championship, scoring twice Sunday to give Portugal a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and a spot in the quarterfinals.

The Real Madrid forward failed to sparkle in Portugal's two previous matches but he was devastating against the Dutch. He produced an equalizer with his first goal of the tournament in the 28th minute and scored the winner in the 74th.

"Once again we showed how united we are as a team," Portugal midfielder Miguel Veloso said. "It wasn't easy to start with a defeat. The secret was our defending, our humility."

Needing a win to have a chance at staying in the tournament, the disappointing Dutch fielded an impressive attacking lineup featuring Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Robin van Persie up front, but it wasn't enough to keep them at Euro 2012.

The Dutch lost in the World Cup final to Spain two years ago and, with stars like Van Persie, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder, had anticipated a strong run at Euro 2012.

Instead, it will be Portugal in the quarterfinals facing the Czech Republic on Thursday in Warsaw.

Rafael van der Vaart had given the Netherlands the lead in the 11th minute at the Metalist Stadium, but Portugal then took control of the match.

And it was Ronaldo that stole the show.

Portugal cranked up the pressure after falling behind, with Ronaldo probing the Dutch back line and equalizing after Joao Pereira's pass. It was the kind of chance he took so often at Real Madrid last season, when he scored 60 goals for his club. In Portugal's first two matches, he wasted those.

Portugal opened Euro 2012 with a 1-0 loss to Germany but rebounded to beat Denmark 3-2. The Portuguese went into the match against the Netherlands with an unchanged team from those encounters.

The Dutch, however, sharpened their attack. After losing their first two games to Denmark and Germany when they started with a lone striker, Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk added Huntelaar alongside Van Persie, the leading scorers in the Bundesliga and Premier League, respectively.

Huntelaar was a spectator for most of the game, while Sneijder was stuck on the left wing in an unexpected tactical decision Van Marwijk.

The Netherlands have beaten Portugal only once in their past 10 meetings, in 1991.

Jack Osbourne reveals he has multiple sclerosis

LOS ANGELES - Reality television star Jack Osbourne, son of rocker Ozzy Osbourne and "America's Got Talent" judge Sharon Osbourne, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, celebrity magazine People reported on Sunday.

Osbourne, 26, who welcomed daughter Pearl with his fianc?e, Lisa Stelly, in April, was given the news of his diagnosis two weeks after his daughter's birth.

"I was just angry and frustrated and kept thinking, 'Why now?'" Osbourne told People. "I've got a family and that's what's supposed to be the most important thing."

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system -- the brain and spinal cord -- and can affect muscle control, strength, vision, balance, thinking and feeling.

Osbourne, the youngest of Ozzy and Sharon's three children, shot to fame as the rebellious teenager alongside his sister Kelly in the MTV reality TV show "The Osbournes" in 2002, a fly-on-the-wall series following Ozzy and his family on their day-to-day lives.

The young star, who has been in rehab for drug abuse in the past, cleaned up his act and starred in his own show in 2005, "Jack Osbourne: Adrenaline Junkie," which saw Osbourne undertaking various extreme sports around the world.

Greece avoids 'Drachmageddon' but crisis remains

The pro-bailout New Democracy Party, led by Antonis Samaras, won the biggest vote in Greece's national election Sunday. Samaras has proposed creating a coalition government to help the struggling nation remain in the eurozone. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Greece appeared to have avoided crashing out of the euro currency zone early Monday after political parties in favor of an international bailout deal won a slim election majority ? but the region?s debt crisis showed no sign of abating.

Antonis Samaras, leader of the conservative New Democracy party, said he was confident of forming a coalition as he announced talks with?leaders of all parties "that believe in Greece's European orientation and the euro."

Foreign leaders reacted positively to the result, viewed as crucial in holding the joint currency together, and there was a brief rally on Europe?s money markets.?

Arriving at the G20 summit meeting in Mexico, Italy?s Prime Minister, Mario Monti, said: ?This allows us to have a more serene vision for the future of the European Union and for the eurozone.?

However, fresh worries over debt problems in Spain and Italy wiped out the market gains. Spanish 10-year government bond yields rose to 7.14 percent, pushing the nation's implied borrowing costs to their highest during the euro's lifetime. Italian 10-year bond yields also rose to 6.08 percent. Seven percent is widely seen as an unsustainably high cost of borrowing.

Citigroup analyst Jurgen Michels said on Monday that, even after the election result, the probability of Greece leaving the euro over the next 12 to 18 months remained at between 50 and 75 per cent, according to Business Insider.

Struggling Greece remains deeply divided over whether to implement a harsh austerity package, the price for receiving a total of $300 billion in bailout money from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to save its near-bankrupt economy.?

Right-winger re-elected despite assault trial
The radical left, anti-austerity SYRIZA bloc won 27 per cent of the vote ? only 2.7 percentage points less than New Democracy, while the ultra-right wing Golden Dawn party also enjoyed success despite its spokesman, Ilias?Kasidiaris, facing trial for assault after slapping a female rival during a live television debate.

Ilias Kasidiaris, member of Greek Parliament and spokesman of extreme-right ultra nationalist party Golden Dawn looks on during a pre-election rally in Athens on Friday.

Kasidiaris was re-elected in Sunday?s poll, according to?Bojan Pancevski?, a reporter for Britain's Sunday Times.

"My biggest fear is of a social explosion," a senior adviser to Samaras told Reuters on Monday. "If there is no change in the policy mix, we're going to have a social explosion even if you bring Jesus Christ to govern this country."?

Despite pro-bailout parties winning a majority in parliament, actual votes for Greece's anti-bailout parties added up to 52 percent.

Samaras now faces the awkward task of convincing the center-left PASOK movement to join a coalition charged with implementing highly unpopular spending cuts and privatizations, while the economy nosedives.?

The streets of central Athens are scarred after repeated waves of protests, some hospitals are running short of vital medicines, thousands of businesses have closed, beggars and rough sleepers are multiplying and suicides are rising.?

Under the terms of the international bailout, the new government must fire up to 150,000 civil servants, slash spending by 11 billion euros this month, sell off a swath of state-owned companies, improve tax collection and open closed professions to competition.?

A PASOK-New Democracy coalition would be guaranteed a parliamentary majority thanks to a quirk of Greek electoral law which gives the winning party a bonus of 50 extra seats. But that will not win the argument on Greece's streets.?

The Greek economy is expected to shrink by 5 percent this year after contracting 7 percent last year and unemployment is running at almost 23 percent. Many economists believe that the harsh austerity measures will only make matters worse in the short term.?

'Fight' goes on for leftists
PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos has previously said he would only formally join a coalition if SYRIZA did so as well, something which is politically impossible, given the radical left bloc's unstinting opposition to the austerity measures.?

Greek analysts noted that SYRIZA's charismatic 37-year-old leader, former student communist Alexis Tsipras, conceded defeat quickly in a phone call to Samaras, apparently relieved he was free of the pressure to form a government and make compromises.?

"From Monday we will continue the fight," Tsipras told cheering supporters in an open-air square outside Athens university. "...the next government after this one will be a left government."?

"We will fight to topple these policies," the youthful crowd chanted back as loudspeakers played World War Two Greek Communist resistance songs.?

Filippos Nikolopoulos, a sociology professor at Crete University and SYRIZA supporter, said that Tsipras's fans were jubilant because they had won new force and authority by increasing their share of the vote so much on Sunday.?

"We want Europe, we want to cooperate," he said. "But we do not want to be subjugated by (German Chancellor) Mrs. Merkel."?

Stathis Stavropoulos, a newspaper cartoonist famous for his drawings depicting German officials preaching austerity at Greece as Nazi taskmasters, said the new conservative government would have the people of Greece against it from the outset.?

"Our dream of European Union was very different," he told Reuters. "It was a union of countries and peoples, not a union to serve banks and not a Fourth German Reich."?

Financial markets had feared a victory for SYRIZA, and New Democracy?s win prompted a surge in shares in early trading on Monday.

"It's a temporary rally but we're seeing broad gains because the global situation has changed now that the prospect of a 'Drachmageddon' has disappeared," said Fumiyuki Nakanishi, general manager of investment and research at SMBC Friend Securities in Tokyo.
