Identifying acute myeloid leukemia gene mutations may indicate risk, best treatment

Identifying acute myeloid leukemia gene mutations may indicate risk, best treatment

Saturday, March 24, 2012

An international group of researchers, including those from Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., have published a paper in the March 14 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reviewing the results of a study that analyzed mutations in 18 genes of 398 patients who had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). They found that several mutated genes predicted improved outcomes when patients with certain gene mutations were given high-dose induction chemotherapy. Their findings suggest that mutational profiling could potentially be used for both risk stratification and also in helping health care providers make therapeutic decisions for some AML patients.

"Previous studies have found that AML is a highly heterogenic disorder," said study co-author Hugo F. Fernandez, a senior member at Moffitt and associate chief of Moffitt's Blood and Marrow Transplantation Division. "Moreover, recent studies have revealed that a number of genetic mutations in AML patients might have prognostic value. The question of the presence of these gene mutations altering outcomes based on current therapy had not been answered to date."

Their paper cites a clinical trial carried out by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) in which dose-intensified chemotherapy improved outcomes in two age sets of AML patients. Based on these findings, the research team hypothesized that carrying out mutational analysis of all known molecular alterations occurring in more than 5 percent of patients with AML might allow for the identification of distinct, molecularly defined subgroups of patients who might benefit from dose-intensified chemotherapy.

The laboratory research team subsequently performed a mutational analysis on diagnostic samples from 398 patients enrolled in the ECOG clinical trial they cited and used patients' frozen sample cells for extraction and profiling. The researchers validated the results of this latter group of 104 patients.

"We found that intensification of the dose of anthracycline significantly improved outcomes and overall survival in patients with mutations in DNMT3A, NPM1 or MLL translocations," said Fernandez. "This finding suggests that mutational profiling could be used to determine which AML patients will benefit from dose-intensive induction therapy."

"Most importantly," said Fernandez, "this study demonstrates how integrated mutational profiling of samples from a clinical trial cohort can advance understanding of the biologic characteristics of AML."

Heart problems in Endurance Athletes | Morpheus

Marathon runners on the run in city

The?message has been well-publicised in all media channels with increasing regularity ?that exercise is good for you. Move your body, whether that be in the gym pushing weights or playing football or hockey on a Saturday morning with your local team and you will most likely get fitter, lose a few pounds and reduce the likelihood of getting some type of metabolic disease and even some forms of cancer. For many, including a number of our personal training clients exercising a few times a week is the most that their busy schedules allows. However, there is a small but growing band of exercisers for whom anything less than extreme levels of exercise training, signing up to marathons,?
triathlons and the like is where it?s at and anything less than this type of training is not going to cut it. The popularity of endurance sports has increased with more than 850 triathlon events and hundreds more marathons and cycle races staged last year. ?However, whilst all this is to be applauded and encouraged, like a lot of things in life can you get too much of a good thing? Are excessive amounts of endurance exercise potentially doing more harm than good? We already know of the potential catabolic effects on skeletal muscle tissue that results in excessive amounts of cardio training but some new research is beginning to look at the possible effects on the heart(muscle) of doing too much endurance exercise which may cause problems later in life. Some scientific research is beginning to show that placing huge loads on the heart over years of prolonged endurance exercise can alter its structure and workings.

Published in the Journal of Sports Medicine the research conducted at Liverpool John Moores University the paper states that ?Lifelong repetitive bouts of arduous endurance exercise may result in fibrotic replacement of the myocardium (heart muscle) in susceptible individuals, resulting in?.the development of arrythmias (uneven heartbeat). Obviously, the key phrase here is ?susceptible individuals? and this post isn?t intended to halt all runners, triathletes et al. in their tracks and have them rush off to the nearest cardiac unit for testing. However, it is intended to bring forth current research and make those who participate in long bouts of endurance training aware of the potential risks. Some of the research using MRI?s compared veteran marathon runners hearts to older non-runners hearts and also younger male endurance athletes. The research showed that half the veteran marathon runners had fibrosis of the heart. Earlier research in a separate study on triathletes demonstrated that the heart muscles are stretched after long endurance training events and that although most of the subjects heart muscles recovered the study warned ?Chronic structural changes and reduced right ventricular function are evident in some of the most practised athletes?.

Less is More

So, should all the would-be first-time marathon runners, seasoned endurance athletes, and middle-aged triathletes cease their training and opt for something shorter and more intense? Well no, but it does perhaps highlight the possible risks that are involved in these types of events and hopefully will make would-be runners ensure they are fully-tested before embarking on a training programme that does place a lot of stress on the heart. Testing, in the forms of exercise stress tests and their like can be useful and advisable in this instance. Should we therefore as a personal training company be encouraging other forms of exercise to an increasingly health-conscious and receptive public? For many a marathon is a one-off event, a chance to challenge oneself, an opportunity to raise money for a good cause or to kick-start a personal fitness programme. But, it?s time consuming and not everyone has the mental strength to continue with this type of training. For many years now the less is more movement or to be more specific the interval based training approach has been gathering momentum. The recent TV programme featuring Michael Mosley?BBC iPlayer ? Horizon: 2011-2012: The Truth About Exercise?showed what could be achieved in short bursts of training ? helping to reduce blood sugar levels, improve insulin function and offset Type 2 diabetes. A similar study in Canada compared the effect of cycling at a moderate pace for 90-120 minutes with a workout comprising 20 seconds of gut-busting pedalling followed by four minutes? rest, repeated 4-6times. After two weeks, both groups of subjects displayed almost identical improvements in aerobic fitness, despite the fact that one set of subjects had actually been pedalling for only 15 minutes, whilst the other over 10 hours!

The rise and rise of the HIIT ( high-intensity interval training) and Tabata style methods have been adopted by many personal trainers in London and no doubt will be the preferred exercise training method of the time-poor. The scientific evidence certainly points to a productive and efficient training approach suitable for today?s busy lifestyles. Even modified Tabata style training programmes have been shown to be effective in improving overall health even after only a few weeks of training. More impressive is the enhanced functioning of blood vessels and heart among people with established cardiovascular disease.

Of the many methods and approaches that are available to condition and train to improve one?s fitness the overriding factor that should always be borne in mind is to find an activity that captivates the interest and keeps us coming back for more. Essentially an activity we enjoy. Once we?ve found something we actually like doing then we?re more likely to stick to it. If this is long endurance events, triathlons etc then so be it ?(full check up beforehand highly-recommended!).?

The best for your electrical work

Are you considered a handy man around house? Have your tried your hand at those small electrical jobs only to end up giving yourself a minor jolt and admitting defeat? Well then, you are one of the numerous people who have finally understood that electrical work is best left to the specialists. If you are looking for electricians in Blackburn, Lancashire, you shouldn?t have much of a problem, there are plenty to be had.

Keep in mind the minor jobs such as changing light bulbs are as much as you should take on yourself. Anything else should be left to the professionals as they can better understand the causes behind the particular problem you have. So here is how you go about getting yourself a reliable electrician.

Make a list of all the service providers in your area. You can use any means to do so ? online research, recommendations from friends and family etc.

The next step is to assess how good each of these professionals are? Look for online reviews and narrow down your list based on what your friends and neighbors tell you as well. Once you have this small list, speak to each of the service providers and ask them for references. The references will be able to tell you of the quality of work to expect from each of these service providers.

When you speak to the representatives of the service providers, find out if they have a special team that answer distress calls on weekends, holidays and late at night. Electrical trouble can spring up any time and you wouldn?t want to be left in the lurch with no one to turn to. Once you have them visit your house, explain to them the layout and the problem you have.

This will help them assess the problems you are facing in a better way and they will be able to do a more thorough job.

No matter how big or small the job is that they are working on for you, do discuss with them how long they plan to take. Also, if some additional materials are going to used, ask for the brand and warranty on those objects. All of these queries will ensure that you get the best out of your electrician and the service he provides. Remember that any electrical work that involves messing around with wires is best left to the specialist.

Making Case for Investing in Tunisia ? humanrights.gov

In January 2011, as the world watched the people of Tunisia oust their ruler of 23 years, a group of Tunisian Americans looked for ways they could help their home country make the transition to democracy.

Within a month, the nonprofit Tunisian American Young Professionals (TAYP) was born. ?We discussed how we wanted to help Tunisia from a distance,? said one of the group?s founders, Mohamed Malouche, ?and [decided] to focus on increasing economic cooperation between Tunisia and the United States.? The guiding mission of the organization, Malouche said, is to help Tunisia benefit from ?the culture of entrepreneurship and innovation that exists in this country.?

What Tunisia has to offer American investors is an extremely educated population. Since the first Tunisian president, Habib Bourguiba, encouraged equal education and employment for women, a large percentage of the population is prepared to work. In fact, said Leila Chennoufi, who works in Washington and has been a member of TAYP since its beginning, it?s the women who have risked the most to educate themselves and would benefit most from foreign investment in Tunisia, and women hold 60 percent of the college degrees in Tunisia.

?Women went ahead and got education,? Chennoufi said, ?and now if they don?t find jobs on the market, it?s the worst that might happen to them. All their investment basically goes down the drain. There?s a lot of frustration. Without a job you don?t have freedom. You?re not able to do with your life whatever you feel like.?

The environment for business investment in Tunisia is much friendlier than it was before the revolution, and it?s the mission of the Tunisian American Young Professionals to convey that to potential investors. ?What the revolution has brought to Tunisia is something very important that did not exist in the past: transparency and rule of law,? Malouche said. In the past, Tunisia?s central bank released only a bottom-line figure for economic indicators. ?You didn?t know if you could trust it; in fact you were better off not trusting it,? he said. ?Now they?re providing raw statistics and raw data that can provide any investor the opportunity to do their own calculations.? Additionally, there are ?hundreds if not thousands of NGOs who are scrutinizing every move and every transaction. We needed those checks and balances.?

?The main difference,? said TAYP member Ihsen Ketata, who came to America from Tunisia to do her doctoral work, ?is that the environment is not as corrupt as it used to be, and there are more incentives from the government to encourage investment. It?s very easy to create a company now in Tunisia.?In America, the Tunisian American Young Professionals have been spreading the word about opportunity in Tunisia. In February, they partnered with the Bilateral U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce and the Tunisian ambassador to the United States for a Tunisian investment road show in Chicago, Houston and Atlanta, where they highlighted the opportunities for investors in Tunisia.

?Tunisia is the most educated country in the Arab world and Africa. It has the seventh largest ratio of scientists and engineers in the region,? Malouche said.

TAYP members also look for guidance from the American business community. ?We go to chambers of commerce, we go to think tanks, we go to universities,? Malouche said. ?We?re seeking their feedback in terms of regulatory reform, access to finance, etc.?

TAYP has been matching young Tunisian entrepreneurs with mentors in the United States who advise on business plans and offer encouragement. ?It?s all about having them believe in themselves,? Malouche said. He feels the Tunisian America Young Professionals offer a perspective not otherwise available to Tunisian entrepreneurs or American business seeking to invest. ?We have the network in Tunisia and the network in the U.S. as well as the understanding of both business climates.?

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Important Information And Facts About ...

Juvenile Psoriatic Arthritis is a chronic disorder that occurs with the inflammation of joints in minors. Both males and females get affected by this disease and approximately 8-20% of juvenile arthritic patients are psoriatic arthritis patients. The average age at which JPA was diagnosed in children (Median age of onset) is 4.5 years for females and 10 for boys. Females also hold the majority among patients.

Causes and Symptoms:

This is another mysteries disease for which, no cause has yet been identified. In most cases, psoriasis is preceded by arthritis. Hence there can be a connection between previous psoriasis infections and this disease. Genetic disorders are also taken into consideration, though no one has been able to produce substantial proof to pass the theory.

Common symptoms are associated with the joints. JPA is considered monoarticular. This means only one joint is affected at the initial stage. Quite often the fingers and toes are the first to get affected. Other joints are the hip, tendons and sole. Joints begin to look swollen, inflamed with difficulty in performing physical activities. If fluid builds up inside the joints in fingers and toes, they can even end up looking like sausages.

As for psoriasis symptoms, the skin begins to produce red or pink patches of skin cells. These are scaly and sometimes irritating. Often found in locations such as the affected joints, knees, elbows, navel and scalp. If the disease is mild, only a few locations will be affected. Itching and burning are some of the other associated symptoms. The nail is another area that gets affected by JPA. 71 % of children experience loosened pitted nails with horizontal lines on them.

The worst case scenario would be deformities to the joint and skeletal growth, shortening of fingers and contracture of joints. Apart inflammation to the eye, particularly in the iris and conjunctiva can result in permanent damages.

Treatment is given to manage the pain, prevent future joint deteriorations and control inflammation. Light dosages of the drugs given to adults are prescribed for children as well. In addition to this, parents are also advised to give children lots of rest and adequate physical therapy. Most of the research indicates that supplements, such as glucosamine HCL, are simply not effective.

There is no treatment method that can put a one time full stop to this disease. Once a person is in the affected zone, even after it subsides, he or she is most likely to get it again. Fortunately, Juvenile Psoriatic Arthritis is not contagious. Therefore, one must keep in mind to fix regular checkups for one?s own safety.

See our Cactus Canyon internet site to find out more about dealing with arthritis using all-natural health supplements such as glucosamine for canines. Our products are particularly effective for safely dealing with arthritis joint disease.

Gothridge Manor: Gaming Goob

What a day.

I won't bore you with those details, but let me bore you with a gaming conversation I had.? To preface this I work in a place that helps people with, let's just call them extreme personalities.? Two of my newbs from my former newb group have found a new game.? The new GM came up me today and said "I got a bone to pick with you."

I know this guy for a while.? And to give you snapshot of his thinking, if he reads one paragraph about a race car he is now the world's best race car driver and mechanic.? "I heard you wouldn't let your players kill any prisoners.? That's wrong." [Goob]

To me arguing about gaming is like arguing religion and politics.? Everyone gets louder, no one listens and at the end no one has changed their mind.? I love having discussions and philosophize about gaming, arguing got no interest. I do not like letting my hobby cross over into my work.? And as far as I was concerned he started pissing in my soup.

"Other party members kept them from killing the prisoners.? And it was one prisoner.? And that's the one they needed to keep alive to get paid.? How's you're game going?" [Me]

"I still don't think you know what you're doing." [Goob]

"Cool.? How many sessions are you into?" [Me]

"Two.? You should have let them kill the prisoners."? [Goob]

"Tell you what, why don't you have them capture someone in your game and let your players hack'm to bits.? Now this is where I am ending this conversation.? I'm working.? And arguing to you about how I GM would be like arguing with a 6 year old about how to drive a car."? [me]

"I've been playing longer than you have.? I was there in the beginning." [Goob]

"Ah, well tell Gary and Dave I said hi." [me]

After that I was able to get him to talk about the adventure he's running.? He is using 2.5 edition.? *shrug*? The adventure itself sounded okay.? But he plays a very confrontational GM.? He's a kinda me vs. you kinda guy.? He laughed about how many times he'd killed them already.? "I want to kill ten of each their characters." [goob]

Later I had an appointment with one of my former newb players that was now in the goob's game.

"So how's the game been going?" [me]

"Not bad.? But he won't let me use my dice you got me."? [newb]

"What?? Why not?"? [me]

"We're only allowed to use his dice."? [newb]

"Okay.? First I've heard of that.? Why?"? [me]

"He said that way no ones gets an advantage rolling different dice.? The dice you gave me might be weighted down."? [newb]

"Apparently he wasn't at our last game when you couldn't hit shit in a pig farm."? [me]

So there you go.? My poor newbs have been gobbled up by a goob GM.? But I still think they are having fun.? I told the goob if he needed help to let me know.? I would still be happy to help out if I could.? Just not during work.

What a day.

Man says Lohan grazed knee with her Porsche

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Lindsay Lohan's black Porsche was surrounded by paparazzi when her sports car grazed the knee of a man outside a Hollywood club early Wednesday, police said.

Lohan drove off and a police report wasn't taken because the Hookah Lounge employee wasn't hurt, Los Angeles police Sgt. Mark Ro said.

The 25-year-old "Mean Girls" star was trying to make a U-turn outside the Wilcox Avenue club at about 12:30 a.m.

"Space was tight," the sergeant said, adding that Lohan may have nudged the lounge employee's parked car, believed to be a Corvette.

"He came out and said, 'Don't hit my car,'" Ro said. "She was making a multipoint U-turn and photographers were in her way."

The sergeant said he didn't know who called police, but the lounge employee, whose name hasn't been released, told officers that Lohan's Porsche grazed his knee. There was no injury and the man's car wasn't damaged.

Lohan drove away.

"We did not take a report for hit-and-run," Ro said. "We didn't go looking for her."

TMZ.com first reported the incident.

A voicemail message left for Lohan attorney Shawn Chapman Holley wasn't immediately returned. Lohan's publicist, Steve Honig, declined comment in an email.

Lohan has a history of bad luck with cars.

A woman claimed in a January lawsuit that she was struck by Lohan's Maserati while walking across a West Hollywood intersection in September 2010.

Nubia Del Carmen Preza's lawsuit said she has suffered "disabling and serious personal injuries, pain, suffering and anguish."

Photographer Grigor Balyan also sued Lohan in January, claiming he was struck by a vehicle in which Lohan was riding in January 2010.

During a court hearing last month, a judge praised Lohan on her progress in a long-running drunken driving case.

The former Disney star has been under strict probation guidelines imposed by Sautner last year, including therapy sessions and weekly stints working at the morgue.

Lohan still had to complete 14 days of work at the morgue and attend five therapy sessions before the judge ends her probation on the 2007 drunken driving case.

She is due back in court March 29 for what could be her final court appearance if she stays out of trouble.

Lohan would remain on informal probation for a case filed after she took a necklace without permission in January 2011, but she would no longer have to report to a probation officer or appear in court for frequent updates.

A Girls? Trip to Italy

Men have their golf weekends, their guided fly-fishing, and that ultimate male-bonding ritual, the heli-ski week, which costs practically as much as a child?s education.? But when it comes time for women to get away, we often sabotage ourselves with convenient excuses.? As a result, some of us never go anywhere together. I found myself reflecting upon this sad fact recently when out of the blue my friend Kate invited me to join her for a girls? week in Italy.

?A what?? I stammered.

?A girls? week in Italy. It?s perfect,? she pointed out, ?with both boys in college you?ll be an empty nester by then. No excuses!?

All we women had to do was get ourselves to Umbria ? where the magical Kate and her sister-in-law had obtained a villa. Waking up a few months later in my tower bedroom in our three-story stone house, which has sat on a hillside piazza facing a small church for nearly 1,000 years, I couldn?t believe I had hesitated, even for an instant. Clearly, the girl who had never taken a girls? trip had come home.

I threw off my linen sheets, tiptoed across the terra cotta tiles and unlatched the shutters to a view of silvery blue hills. In the distance, the Renaissance towers of Orvieto rose above a golden valley. Everything was thrillingly exotic, yet most thrilling of all was our agenda: there wasn?t one.

A young woman would come cook our breakfast, but not until nine. This meant morning was for the ladies to luxuriate. How civilized! How utterly Italian! No one went jogging. No one checked email. Everyone slept in, steeped in sensuous well-being and dolce far niente. I climbed back into bed with a novel but had to glance up every few pages just to admire my room with its ancient stone walls and lace curtains.

Our house had a sturdy dining room table, and by the time the five of us drifted down for coffee in our pajamas, we?d already begun improvising our own girls? version of an old-fashioned Tuscan holiday: We?d venture out each day, but we wouldn?t complicate things too much. One day we?d see Siena; another, we?d make a pilgrimage to Assisi, birthplace of Saint Francis, and home to the lovely Basilica of Saint Francis with its Cimabue and Giotto frescoes. In between light touring we?d treat ourselves to long lunches, gelato whenever we felt like it, espresso and, of course, an afternoon of hand-painted ceramics shopping in Deruta.

We also decided we?d stay in at night and cook for ourselves, so we wouldn?t have to drive the winding roads back to the villa after dinner. That?s right ? we were officially five women on vacation!

At first I wasn?t at all sure about this part of the plan, but it turned out to be brilliant. A few of the women were accomplished cooks and the rest of us liked to pretend. We hit a local market on the way home from Siena and left with enough provisions to play in the kitchen for days.

To kick off our first cocktail hour, we all clambered down the villa?s narrow, dimly lit basement steps to the wine cellar, a tomb-like grotto believed to date back 2,500 years to the village?s original Etruscan settlement. Its walls were lined with racks of regional wine and olive oil. There were two varietals: a red and a white. None of the bottles were labeled, so we chose some red ones and some white ones, lugging them back up to the kitchen.

While we were roasting our organic chickens, boiling water for our spaghetti con melanzane, assembling salads of vine-ripened tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, and slicing plump figs from the terrace, we drank a toast to our hostesses, and to our surprise and delight, discovered our unlimited house wine was superb.

An evening routine was born: two of us would cook while the rest of us sat in the small kitchen and talked over glasses of wine; then we?d all share a delicious dinner around the small kitchen table and have more wine, talking late into the night. Those who didn?t cook cleaned up; if you cleaned one night you cooked the next. When we ran out of wine, all we had to do was climb down to our Etruscan cellar and bring up another bottle.

Our motives weren?t entirely sybaritic, however. After we?d sated ourselves with la dolce vita in the countryside, we hopped a train from Orvieto to Rome, and had barely parked our wheelie bags in our hotel rooms, when we were out the door. Not to see the Colosseum, Saint Peter?s Basilica, or the Spanish Steps. No, and here I have a confession to make: we hightailed it to that other holy grail, the Via Condotti ? which has some of the world?s best shopping. The famous street was packed with well-heeled Italians seeking luxury in all its forms. If there was a global recession going on, none of them seemed to have gotten the message.

Intoxicated, we staggered from store to store, shy at first, but then trying on jewelry, slinky tops, sheath dresses, cropped knit jackets with feminine ruffled collars, leather jackets, and of course, shoes ? fabulous shoes. We happened to be traveling in the company of a world-class shopper with a keen eye, and we trailed behind her like ducklings: once we finally jumped in and got our feet wet, we had a blast splashing about.

We did make it to the Colosseum eventually, and we got up early one morning for a remarkable private tour of the Vatican. But when I think back upon our trip, it isn?t the Borghese Gallery that first comes to mind, or even the Pantheon, with its wondrous opening to the sky.

No, the thing I treasure most was just being in a place like Italy together ? and getting to be girls together. Surrounded by shopping bags at a stylish restaurant where we?d crashed for lunch late one afternoon, we were startled when a tall Scandinavian-looking woman approached us with a determined, urgent expression.

Were we sitting at a reserved table ? or worse, speaking too loudly? ?Excuse me, but are you? sisters?? she asked, gesturing at the five of us surrounded by antipasto platters and glasses of Peroni and bags full of beautiful things, clearlyhaving the time of our lives.

We looked at each other for a moment and then all said at the same time,

?Yes! Sisters!?

And to this day, I believe it to be true.

Go Beyond Gold and Look at Silver and Platinum ? Investing Daily

When it comes to precious metals, gold bullion and gold mining stocks garner all the attention. Although gold has been the preferred means of exchange for millennia, there are other precious metals, such as silver and the platinum group metals (PGMs), that are not just theoretical stores of monetary value but also have actual industrial application. These metals not only benefit from the same investor psychology driving gold?s ascent, their gains will also be spurred by global economic growth. And the loose monetary policy of the world?s central banks should continue to be a boon for precious metals.

According to the Silver Institute, 46.1 percent of world silver supply in 2010 was used in industrial applications. Silver?s unique properties, such as its thermal and electrical conductivity and catalytic ability, make it difficult for manufacturers to substitute a cheaper metal in its stead. Barring an unforeseen shock to the global economy, industrial consumption of silver is expected to grow by at least 4.6 percent annually through 2015. The presidential election year, silver?s strong start to the year, and its relative valuation to oil must all also be considered, however.

PGMs have unique properties? including their catalytic ability, durability and high melting point?that make them indispensable for everything from nylon production to catalytic converters. According to Platinum Today, 96.6 percent of 2011 supply (excluding recycling) of platinum, palladium and rhodium went toward autocatalyst and industrial applications.

Without recycling efforts, palladium demand would have exceeded supply by 19.8 percent. Additionally, an average of 13.6 percent of global palladium supply over the past seven years has resulted from Russia?s liquidation of stockpiles built up during a Soviet-era production glut? those sales are expected to dwindle after 2013. Once that occurs, demand for palladium will likely outpace supply.

Precious metals can be incredibly volatile, so it?s important that your total allocation to the asset class does not exceed 5 percent of your portfolio. Also, long-term capital gains on direct investments in precious metals are subject to the 28 percent collectibles tax rate. That rate even applies to investments in popular precious metals exchange-traded funds (ETF), such as iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV). Fortunately, neither of the two stocks discussed below is subject to the collectibles tax.

Silver Wheaton Corp (NYSE: SLW) is a metals-streaming company that purchases the silver that?s a byproduct of miners? core production of gold and base metals. The company structures its contracts so that in exchange for an upfront payment, it has the right to purchase some or all of a mine?s silver production.?

Silver Wheaton avoids the capital-intensive operation of mines, and is able to obtain its silver at a low average cost of around $4 per ounce. In fact, the company?s minimal overhead allowed it to boast an 85.2 percent operating margin over the trailing year. Even better, the company produced five-year annualized earnings growth of 62.9 percent. Management forecasts its annual silver production to rise from roughly 26 million ounces in 2011 to 43 million ounces by 2015.

Silver has been particularly volatile over the past year, rising to almost $50 an ounce, and then falling by nearly half before resuming its ascent. Because Silver Wheaton is essentially an unhedged play on the white metal, the market often treats the stock as a proxy for silver. As such, investors should wait for shares of Silver Wheaton to fall toward $30 before building a position in the stock.?

PGM miners primarily operate in politically risky countries such as Russia and South Africa. So rather than incur the risk of selecting one or two mining stocks, it makes more sense to purchase the basket of PGM plays held by First Trust ISE Global Platinum (NasdaqGM: PLTM). The ETF?s 23 holdings span all market capitalizations, with the largest concentration in the mid-cap range. The fund is also geographically diversified, though companies domiciled in South Africa still constitute a substantial 40.4 percent of holdings.

The ETF currently trades at a 1.62 percent premium to its net asset value, so investors should wait until this premium disappears rather than overpay for assets.

Sudan investment conference called off as U.S. pulls out

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - An international conference to drum up investment in Sudan has been called off after the United States and other powers signaled they would not attend in protest over Sudan's crackdown on rebels, diplomats and officials said on Sunday.

Sudan needs a financial lifeline after its economy was thrown into turmoil when South Sudan declared independence in July under a 2005 peace deal, taking with it three-quarters of the oil production -- the driving force of both economies.

Diplomats said Western powers such as the United States had initially supported the joint Norwegian and Turkish initiative for a high-level Sudan conference to help soften the blow of the loss of oil by generating investment and economic assistance.

It was scheduled to be held in Istanbul on March 23/24. A Norwegian diplomat confirmed the meeting had been postponed with no new date set.

Sudan is waging a campaign against rebels of the SPLM-North in the South Kordofan and Blue Nile border states. The United States and refugees have accused Khartoum of air strikes against civilians, charges strongly denied by Sudan.

The United Nations says more than 410,000 people have been displaced by the fighting.

Western powers also shun Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir who was indicted by the International Criminal Court over war crimes in Darfur, the scene of a nearly-decade old insurgency.

NO NEW DATE SOON

Diplomats said the conference was unlikely to happen anytime soon with no Western economic aid or debt relief likely to be forthcoming as long as fighting in the two states continued.

"We were surprised by the U.S. request to ask to not get invited to the conference," Ashraqa Said Mahmoud, minister for international cooperation, told reporters in Khartoum.

"The United States has decided to back off from its earlier commitments ... We agreed to postpone this conference until we can guarantee an effective participation."

Fighting broke out in South Kordofan in June and spread to Blue Nile in September. Both states border South Sudan which Khartoum accuses of supporting the SPLM-North rebels. The SPLM is the ruling party in Juba which denies any rebel support.

The two states are home to populations who sided with the South during the civil war and were left on the Sudan side of the border after Juba's secession.

Sony PlayStation Vita Performance Review | Video Game Reviews ...

Sony-PlayStation-Vita

In the gaming world, New Year celebrations are determined by the number of new titles, and whether any new platform is going to be released in the upcoming year. This year PlayStation took center stage and rolled out its latest gaming venture; the PlayStation Vita. Vita is Sony?s contribution to be the next generation handheld market, building on the solid foundation which PlayStation portable made, selling more than 70 million units worldwide.

As of yet, the PlayStation Vita has officially only been launched in parts of Asia, but surprisingly it didn?t create the impact that was anticipated. Japan, considered to be Sony?s home territory, lacked in initial sales figures and general excitement amongst hardware packed in Vita is nothing short of being drool-worthy. Though North America, Europe and South America are completely different kind of market, Sony will have to rethink their marketing strategy.

The Beast in Vita

Let?s get something out of the way first; the PlayStation Vita packs a powerful punch. Capable of churning out insane graphics, the likes of which have a handheld, its proper gaming platform. A blend of four-core ARM cortex A-9 processor, 512MB Ram (128MB of video Ram) and, for addition eye candy. A dedicated quad core GPU is a very respectable spec sheet for any gaming device. Focusing on the form factor is a bit tricky, since it?s bigger than most mobile phones but smaller than most tablets. The design is somewhat similar to the PlayStation portable, plus the welcome addition of dual analogue sticks and a vibrant 5-inch OLED capacitive touch display. Which, I must say, is absolutely dazzling to look at; the colors are deeper that what most Android phones in market can manage, and the size of the gaming gadget really enriches the experience. The shoulder buttons, the d-pad and face buttons are all still there, but your fingers will probably be spending most of their time onscreen.

Superior software

Vita comes preloaded with a bundle of technologies at your disposal. A read touchpad gives gaming a whole new perspective, and altering the pressure of your fingers makes the game respond in different ways. We saw this in action at the e3 conference, where the read touch pad was used to manipulate the terrain in ModNation Racers. Also, new on the hardware are dual VGA cameras (front and rear facing), a six-axis motion sensory system, built-in GPS and a 3-axis electronic compass. The usual blend of wireless technologies is also there. The build quality is as you would expect. Top notch and not for a second will you feel like Sony tried to cut any corners. The feedback and resistance of the buttons is well-balanced and the tactile response from the body shows that it is meant to last.

New battle frontiers

The war has moved on. The battle for superior hardware has been overtaken by how software is implemented to fully utilize the hardware. The time-frame that people now have is very limited; not only for gaming, but entertainment in general. To make things even harder for the handheld in duster, Casual games are captivating even the most hardcore gamers. So superior graphics have been overshadowed by fun and intuitive game play. Mobile phones have started to justify the tag of being called ?Smartphone?s? and the value of being in consumers? pockets has skyrocketed. Sony is fighting an uphill battle with its Vita, and to ensure that they make its presence known, they have launched Vita with the strongest gaming lineup ever by Sony.

Several AAA titles including Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Call of Duty, FIFA, Silent Hill, Wipeout 2048, Supremacy MMA, Ridge Racer, Ninja Gaiden, and Virtua Tennis 4 have been launched or are in the pipeline to be released in the near future. How well these games fare is what we have to see ? after all, it?s the games that make or break a platform.

Intuitive is they name

On the interface front, Sony has deviated from XrossMediaBar (XMB), and introduced something called Live Area. Heavily influenced by the phones of today, it?s a touch-sensitive navigational environment that focuses on apps with big, bold floating icons to do all the work. It checks all the boxes of being a decent UI; smooth, fast and animated. Everything here has an app, from movies, pictures, settings to?. Yeah, everything. This may be fine for most, but I felt a little restricted. Facebook, Twitter, Skype etc are all integrated and Sony will be looking to add a few more apps in the upcoming firmware updates.

PlayStation Vita has also ditched the universal Media Disc (UMD), and have come out with a memory card aptly title the PlayStation Vita card. These will be available in 4GB to 32GB range. Games are purchased from the PSN Store and downloaded directly onto the card, or a physical card with a preloaded game can be bought, though the earlier option sounds more Eco-friendly. Games range from a reasonable 14.99 US dollars a rather expensive-for-a-handheld 49.99 US dollars.

What lies ahead?

Tough times lay ahead for this gem of a console. However, we already know that Sony knows how to play ball when it comes to driving sales up through sheer exclusive content. Vita isn?t just battling Nintendo for the handheld gaming market share, like its predecessor had done; it?s also competing with Android and Apple devices. Tablets and Smartphone?s have already caused major ripples, and the focus has shifted significantly away from the exclusive handheld gaming market. And that only heightens the anticipation. Sony has launched a PlayStation SDK, which is trying to bridge the gap between its PlayStation firmware and Android by letting developer?s port content. But the results are yet to be seen. It is the first time Sony is going to be perceived as the underdog in this market, and they better step their game up.

When considering streaming video for your internet site, you need to take a look at all of the different ways in which somebody can gain advantage from either viewing or offering streaming video. This is a seriously well liked system of having the ability to view info and videos online, and there are many reasons for this. While a few of the people offer the facility to download certain materials and video clips from their website, folks can offer streaming video from their website in order to help capture the awareness of the people that have an interest in viewing it. First of all, a person can take up less memory on their website by offering streaming videos.

Offering people to download your videos from your website may lead to the site to run more slowly if many people are downloading all at the same time. When a site or a video is particularly preferred, this is a great thing when talking about the video, nonetheless it might be a negative thing when it comes down to the website from which the video is available. Nevertheless this isn't the only possible way in which an individual can benefit and proper from being able to offer streaming video from their website to the spectators of the internet site. More benefits are in store for these individuals , as well as for the individuals that may be able to utilize the internet site for their viewing pleasure.

Streaming video uses less time when talking about playing the material in most instances, so many folks prefer it to downloading the material. Streaming video for your internet site can be played almost right away, very like an individual person can turn on their television and see the channels straight away. There are some times in which an individual must wait very momentarily so as to watch the video simply because the media player and the host server need to substantiate a connection, and then the video must be buffered, but then it can be played quite simply.

Meanwhile, the process of downloading a video can take a longer quantity of time since the individual will be unable to play the video at all till it is totally downloaded and the individual has located the file on their computer. Dependent on a person?s connection to the web, the time of this process will vary a lot.

However , compared with streaming video it is in most cases slower than the streaming video is when it is offered on asite. As a consequence, there are many folks that have an interest in being offered the chance to view streaming video off of an internet site in opposition to having the ability to download a video off a website and then having to find the file and play it from another media player. It is far less difficult to just play the file on the website, and it generally takes far less time to finish this action when compared to the other available options of viewing or playing a specific video or file.

If you want to watch streaming video both online and offline I suggest reading my Google TV review and my Apple TV review to determine which one is best for you.

This role play will take place in Chicago, Illinois during the roaring 20's where many of American's historical events took place. The first Great War had just ended and now alcohol is being prohibited in order to preserve the resource of grain. While some agree with the choice the United States Government has made, others do not. Organized crime is beginning to take hold of the city by the means of alcohol smuggling, prostitution, and murder. Gangsters have a shadowy rule over their sectors of town and none dare to walk into another's territory unless they wish to meet their ends by the hand of "Tommy" Thompson; a well known submachine gun.

The Untouchables and Gangsters are not the only characters that are allowed in the game. There is a wide range of characters that can be made such as flappers, con-men, movie stars, or normal people. The information below is to help get a better understanding of the era and perhaps inspire a little creativity.

Prohibition
The society of the 1920's is at odds with itself. There are those of older generations and the middle class who still cling to the Puritan ethics that accompanied our Founding Fathers. This segment of society wallows in propriety of the later 19th Century and the first decade of the 20th. Religious groups made up mostly of women searching to assert themselves politically formed a crusade against immoral practices including the consumption of liquor.

Racism
The temperance movement achieved much of its success through propaganda tactics thrown at middle classes deepest fears. As socialism and communism achieved their greatest victories to date in the last two elections, many felt that it was due to the large influx of immigrants from European nations. Prohibition played on the fears of the white Anglo-Saxon American by linking immigrants to many social issues including the consumption of alcohol as European cultures had a tendency to imbibe. In this environment, discrimination was the norm. African Americans were still saddled with segregation laws that were common in both the North and South. Chicago was not an exception. Tensions among working class whites and black were high as each competed for jobs.

Women
In response to the victories women's temperance groups received with the ratification of the Prohibition Amendment, women were finally considered a real political force in the nation and the right to vote was given with the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1920. However, while American women are for the first time asserting themselves, ideals of the time still dictate what roles women are to fill in society and in the home. Women are paid less than men and have fewer opportunities available to them than in our modern times. Properly brought up young ladies still require chaperones while with a suitor, they still are dependant on their fathers and husbands, and are not thought of as equals by the general male population. The younger generations of American women are hampered by the double standards that both their male peers and their matriarchs still cling. The response to this is a rebellion in the form of flapper culture.

Flappers
It was here that the flapper came to be. Young women rebelled against the old matriarchs and cut their hair short and hiked up their hem lines and painted their faces in the spirit of their new found freedom sparked by economic wealth and new political rights. The flappers male counterpart was known as the Flaming Youth. Both decadent party goers demanded the access to the liquors that were accessible to the very well connected and thus a demand that had never really vanished increased.

Economics and the New Decade
There was a backlash response to the religious fervor that forced it rural values on the rest of the nation. This backlash was in part caused by the economic upswing dazzling most of the nation. Unemployment was low, wages were up and many people of all classes found themselves with money to burn. Following the example of the wealthiest segments of society, the middle class was now buying on credit and speculating in the stock market which was rising at a feverish pace. This created a new class of wealthy among the higher social circles known as the Nouveau Riche(or New Rich). This created confidence in most urban societies and a transition from old to new began. The new generation resented the hold of the crones of the temperance movements with their Victorian ideals and began their rebellion with a zeal matching that of the Prohibitionists. These newly rich mixed freely with the old rich socialites but were resented for their lack of breeding. However, it barely mattered as the party is what they were all after.

The Rise of Organized Crime and Bootleggers
This was the Golden Age of the mob, which prior to Prohibition was limited to rackets, extortion, prostitution, and infiltration of labor unions. Prohibition provided a demand for an illegal service that was too lucrative to pass by. The money earned from the distribution and sale of liquor into the United States provided the bank roll for the mob to become an invisible force in our modern economics today.

Entertainment/Media
Hollywood was in the beginning of its heyday. The silent movie became a staple of every American's choice of entertainment and it became an occasion to put on one's best and head to the spectacular movie houses of the urban centers. The Studio system was born out of Edison's little contraption. These studios were started by primarily extremely wealthy Jewish patrons who also supported the theater. Names like Valentino, Swanson, Fairbanks, Keaton, and Chaplin delighted audiences and whisked them away to the magical world of the silver screen.

Government
Politicians were regularly bought and sold and owned by the Mob. However, there were a growing number of politicians especially on the national level that began to put the pressure on city officials to do something about organized crime. Eventually, it will be Federal officers that get the Mafia. Most politicians played ball with the Mob as they were particularly wealthy, violent and powerful at this time. They were not all crooked, but it was a good bet that the police and city officials were on someone's payroll. Corruption is a way of life in Chicago and most already know that and know Chicago has a buddy system all its own.

Calvin Coolidge is President. His radical theories on trickle-down economics lead to the sharp rise in economic growth of the nation. Everyone loved Coolidge. However, his policies eventually led to a growth that could not be sustained and in 1929, the Market Crashed.

Law Enforcement
Chicago PD was rife with corruption as 80% to 90% of all officers were on someone's payroll.

Technology
What they have: radios, revolvers, tommyguns, the discovery of germs and microscopic life, forensics is in its infancy (mainly just fingerprints) no DNA or anything sophisticated, and physics is blooming.

Superstition
Parlor tricks, s?ances, fortune telling, ouija boards were part of any good dinner party in the 1920's. The wealthy enjoyed the company of psychics and astrologists for their salons and wild parties. Carnivals and fairs always featured these charlatans and books on tarot and witchcraft were the rage. Most cities were accompanied by a rich oral tradition in urban legends and Chicago was no exception.

Fashion
Dress codes were way less casual than today's. It was typical for women to wear hats and gloves. Men wore hats and suits. Most in people in general enjoyed wearing nice clothing and "Puttin' on the Ritz". Were colorful and ornate accessories accompanied both outfits?whether it be a gentleman's pocket watch or a woman's hair pin.

Men: Men's fashions hadn't changed much over the ages. Slacks and cotton dress shirts were the norm even for laborers in the cities. Suits and fedoras and possibly spats accompanied the average middle class male. A flaming youth would typically dress with a straw hat and resemble a member of a barbershop quartette.

Women: Hemlines were at the knees or lower and the straight silhouette was popular. Some even dared to wear slacks for occasions that were to be active and casual. Hair was worn up or in a short bob and accompanied by a head dress or hat or scarf. Materials were luxurious and colorful.
