Every generation has its James Dean: the rebel who refuses to follow the path beaten by their peers. Now, a new study in Current Biology has found a link between the amount of grey matter in one specific brain region and an individual's likelihood of conforming to social pressures.
Individuals are presented with many choices in life, from political alignments through to choosing which sandwich to eat for lunch. Their eventual decisions can be influenced by the options chosen by those around them. Although differences in individuals' tendencies to conform to social pressures are commonly observed, no anatomical measure has previously been linked to the likelihood of someone conforming under the influence of their peers.
Now, in research funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and the Wellcome Trust, scientists at New York University, Aarhus University and the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL (University College London) have identified the first such measure to predict how an individual will react to social pressure.
To identify structural measures of the brain that could relate to this trait, the team first measured the volumes of brain regions in 28 participants. This approach involved a technique known as voxel based morphometry, which allows researchers to measure the volume of grey matter (the nerve cells where the processing takes place) from three-dimensional images of the brain provided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
To measure how participants responded to social influence, they were tested to see how their preferences for certain pieces of music changed after being told what authoritative 'music critics' thought about them.
A week prior to testing, each participant listed 20 songs they liked but didn't personally own. On the day of the test, the participants rated their choices out of ten.
Next, the researchers stated that music critics with expert opinions had listened to the participants' choices and had also rated these songs out of ten. The participants then performed a task comparing their choices with unknown music. Following the task, the participants rerated their 20 choices, and the degree to which their opinions differed in light of hearing the critics' ratings served as a measure of conformity under social influence.
Strikingly, only grey matter volume in one precise brain region ? the lateral orbitofrontal cortex ? was associated with this measure of social influence. The linear relationship between grey matter volume and the tendency of individuals to conform was observed in this particular region in both hemispheres of the brain.
In a previous study, the researchers had looked at the level of activity in the participants' brains when faced with disagreement with the experts. This activity predicted how much influence the experts would have. By comparing the measures in this new study with the previous findings, they were able to show that grey matter volume in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex also predicted how individuals responded when the critics disagreed with their opinions. These findings suggest that the brain region is particularly tuned to recognising cues of social conflict, such as when someone disapproves of a choice, which may prompt the subject to update their opinions accordingly.
Study leader Professor Chris Frith says: "The ability to adapt to others and align ourselves with them is an important social skill. However, at what level is this skill implemented in the brain? At a software (information processing) or hardware (structural) level? Our results show that social conformation is, at least in part, hard-wired in the structure of the brain."
Dr Daniel Campbell-Meiklejohn, first author of the study, explains the implications of their findings: "This opens a new chapter on the social consequences of brain atrophy and brain development. People with damage to this region often display changes of personality and social interaction. This finding suggests that perhaps we should look at how these individuals learn what is important from the expressed preferences of others."

'American Idol' Adds 'Gotcha!' Twist, More Heejun Han

"American Idol" opened with 70 contestants Thursday (February 16) and ended with 42, as the Las Vegas cuts — referred to alternately as "brutal," "painful" and "deep" — lived up to their billing.
Some who made it through on the strength of their performances were later told they, in fact, didn't make it through, a new twist. The twist wasn't given a name, but it should have been called the "Gotcha!" — as in, "Oh, you thought you were going to go on to achieve your dream of being a singer? Gotcha!"
In Vegas, contestants were asked to form groups and sing songs from the '50s and '60s onstage at the Aria hotel, home to the "Viva Elvis" show.
The episode began, as all future "Idol" episodes should, with Heejun Han talking directly into the camera while wearing a red hooded sweatshirt. Han's feud with this year's resident cowboy contestant, Richie Law, has already proven he's a dry-witted jokester at heart. But Han is also able to turn on the charm, such as when he tamed the "Vocal Coach from Hell," Peggi Blu, and turned her into a pile of mush in his own hands. Regardless of Han's chances this season, he should be considered for the position of next "Idol" host, should Ryan Seacrest ever abandon his post. Or hey, isn't "The X Factor" looking for a new emcee?
Han — God bless Steven Tyler, who sang "Heejun" to the tune of "Hey Jude" when calling his name — made it through to the next round, along with groupmates Phillip Phillips (he apparently is going by "Phil" Phillips now, but we still prefer Phillip Phillips) and Neco Starr. Jairon Jackson initially made it through but then caught an ax to his jugular after the "Gotcha!" twist reared its ugly head. Sorry, man, no one said Las Vegas was going to be all fun and games.
Richie Law, who tormented Han when they were groupmates in Hollywood, found a new victim to torture in Las Vegas in Jermaine Jones. The two baritones made for an unlikely duo, joining forces on "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," but they pulled it off — but only after Law once again showed his stubbornness, telling cameras, "I didn't come here to recycle music; I came here to make it." His determination paid off, but he needs to find a less aggressive way to celebrate; Jones accused him of both bruising his rotator cup and almost taking his neck off while manhandling him following their victory.
The foursome to watch Thursday was the group composed of Reed Grimm, Elise Testone, Haley Johnson and Eben Franckewitz, who earned a standing ovation from the judges and were dubbed "unreal" by Steven Tyler for their version of "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes." The performance came together in note-perfect fashion, as both Grimm — compared by some to an emerging Casey Abrams, though he reminds us more of actor Ethan Embry for some reason — and heartthrob-in-training Franckewitz made their presences felt.
Other victims of the "Gotcha" twist included Gabi Carrubba, Candice Glover, Jairon Jackson, Gaga-alike Angie Ziederman and Schyler Dixon, whose brother, Colton, made it through to the next round. Singers who just plain got cut the first time around included Molly Hunt, Curtis Gray, Curtis Finch Jr., Mathenee Treco and Nick Boddington.
While most contestants took their dismissals in stride, Jessica Phillips wins the Sour Grapes Award for most bitter rant of the night, telling cameras, "I'm an actual artist. It just doesn't seem like they're looking for real artists," after the judges told her to pack her bags. She continued: "I didn't come here to win a television show; I came here for a record deal. And, um, a lot of people are making it through that are not real artists, and they're not going to sell any records, and I don't have to worry about that because that's not me."
Britnee Kellogg, the 27-year-old single mom from Vancouver, Washington, sang alongside Phillips and initially made it through, but was later cut thanks to the "Gotcha!" Only 24-year-old Courtney Williams of Philadelphia made it through from their original trio.
Next week, the Idols will continue to fight for their lives as the field is narrowed from 42 to 24.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 15, 2012) ? A team of scientists from the Charit? and German Rheumatism Research Center Berlin and the University of Geneva has found a fundamentally new mechanism how our defense system is ramped up when facing a viral intruder. Exploitation of this mechanism in vaccines sparks new hope for better prevention and therapy of infectious diseases and cancer.
"T killer cells" (CD8 T cells) represent an important element of our body's defense system. They have the capacity to specifically identify and kill cells, which harbor viruses and bacteria or form a cancer. T killer cells would therefore represent an important component of yet unavailable vaccines against infections like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C virus and malaria, and also for the treatment of cancer.
It has been a longstanding observation that there is no match to the overwhelming T killer cell armada, which is triggered when a viral infection invades our body. Scientists had generally accredited this observation to "pathogen-associated molecular patterns" (PAMPs) on viruses and other microbes. PAMPs, i.e. the "foreign look" of viruses, alert so-called "dendritic cells," which serve as policemen coordinating the T killer cell response.
In a report now published in the journal Science, researchers led by Prof. Max L?hning (Charit?-University Medicine & DRFZ Berlin) and Prof. Daniel Pinschewer (University of Geneva) describe an additional general mechanism by which viral infection triggers potent T killer cells: "Dying virus-infected cells themselves ring the alarm bells to T killer cells.," L?hning says. Viruses cause infected cells to die, resulting in the release of cell components, which normally are not be visible to the outside -- analogous to an injured individual loosing blood. Such substances, heralding injury when released, are referred to as "alarmins." The scientists found that T killer cells can sense an alarmin called "interleukin 33" (IL-33). IL-33 is contained in cells, which form the scaffold of the T killer cells' home, the spleen and lymph nodes, and is released when such scaffold cells die.
Mice lacking the gene encoding IL-33 failed to form a large T killer cell army upon viral infection. The few remaining cells had very poor fighting skills. Such mice were therefore exquisitely sensitive to several types of viral infections. Conversely, IL-33 could be used to artificially increase the T killer cell army, which was generated in response to vaccination. As Max L?hning and Daniel Pinschewer explain, PAMPs and alarmins apparently have complementary and non-redundant functions in shaping our T killer cell defense: "The "foreign look" of viruses (PAMPs) activates the "dendritic cell" policemen to engage T killer cells. T killer cells, however, remain lousy fighters unless alerted by a cell death in their neighborhood (alarmins)." These new findings could provide a key to effective vaccination against infectious diseases and cancer.

A Media Rating Council resolution opposes attempts to "exhort the public to cooperate with station audience measurement services... because of its possible biasing effect." In other words, trying to get people to watch may result in them actually watching.
There's a reasonable basis for the rule: You don't want every Nielsen family to be bribed with new cars in the driveway, for example. That might lead to a terrifying world in which dumb, lowest-common denominator shows thrive even as intelligent, challenging ones are cancelled.
It's unlikely that Winfrey's tweets caused any huge spike in OWN's ratings that Nielsen will have to explain, break out, or even refuse to record. Winfrey took to Twitter at the worst possible time, during a Grammys ceremony that turned out to be the second-most watched ever, thanks in part to its many Whitney Houston tributes. Winfrey may as well have cadged for viewers during the Super Bowl.
Nielsen's review drew stories from The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other news outlets. Some accused Winfrey of "begging" for viewers by asking them to watch her shows, as did many on Twitter.
OWN has earned lower ratings than Discovery Health, the network it replaced last year at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, and the Twitter incident struck a chord because it seemed emblematic of her ratings troubles.
It suggested that the Queen of Talk would stop at nothing to get Nielsen families to watch -- even asking them to watch.

Ky school officials say bedbugs at school a hoax
AUGUSTA, Ky. (AP) ? Augusta Independent School Principal Robin Kelsch had enough to worry about with the flu. Kelsch didn't need a student's report of bedbugs at the school to make things worse.
But, that's what he got.
Kelsch told The Ledger Independent that the report turned out to be a hoax, but school office phones were ringing with concerned parents on the other end (http://bit.ly/y6sYQw).
Kelsch said the rumor started when a student brought in a water bug and squashed it, then told her friends it was a bedbug "just to scare them."
Kelsch said officials checked the school, then bleached and cleaned it and found "absolutely no" bedbugs.
As far as can be determined, Kelsch said, no one used the bedbug rumor as an excuse to skip school.

Even moderate air pollution can raise stroke risks

Air pollution, even at levels generally considered safe by federal regulations, increases the risk of stroke by 34 percent, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center researchers have found.
Writing in the Feb. 14, 2012 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers who studied more than 1,700 stroke patients in the Boston area over a 10-year period found exposure to ambient fine particulate matter, generally from vehicle traffic, was associated with a significantly higher risk of ischemic strokes on days when the EPA's air quality index for particulate matter was yellow instead of green.
Researchers focused on particles with a diameter of 2.5 millionths of a meter, referred to as PM2.5. These particles come from a variety of sources, including power plants, factories, trucks and automobiles and the burning of wood. They can travel deeply into the lungs and have been associated in other studies with increased numbers of hospital visits for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks.
"The link between increased stroke risk and these particulates can be observed within hours of exposure and are most strongly associated with pollution from local or transported traffic emissions," says Murray A. Mittleman, MD, DrPH, the study's senior author, a physician in the CardioVascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Any proposed changes in regulated pollution levels must consider the impact of lower levels on public health."
"Considering that almost everyone is exposed to air pollution and is at risk for stroke, that's actually a pretty large effect," adds Gregory Wellenius, ScD, the study's lead author and an Assistant Professor of Community Health at Brown University.
Researchers analyzed the medical records of more than 1,700 patients who went to the hospital for treatment of confirmed strokes between 1999 and 2008. They matched the onset of stroke symptoms in each patient to hourly measurements of particulate air pollution taken at the nearby Harvard School of Public Health's environmental monitoring station.
The team was able to estimate the hour the stroke symptoms first occurred, rather than relying on the more coarse measure of when patients were admitted to the hospital. They also included only strokes confirmed by attending neurologists, rather than relying on more vague insurance billing codes.
Meanwhile, Harvard's hourly measurements of pollution within 13 miles of 90 percent of the stroke patients' homes allowed for close matching in time of exposure and stroke onset.
"We think that this study is novel in that it has high-quality data on both air pollution exposure and stroke diagnosis," Wellenius says.
The team was able to calculate that the peak risk to patients from pollution exposure occurs 12-14 hours before a stroke. That information may be useful to researchers who want to trace how PM2.5 might be working in the body to increase the likelihood of stroke.
They also found that black carbon and nitrogen dioxide, two pollutants associated with vehicle traffic, were closely linked with stroke risk, suggesting that pollution from cars and trucks may be particularly important.
Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and the third leading cause of death in the United States. An estimated 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke every year, resulting in more than 135,000 deaths and 829,000 hospital admissions.
The finding that days of moderate air quality substantially elevate stroke risk compared to days of good air quality suggest that the Environmental Protection Agency may need to strengthen the language it uses to describe the health consequences of moderate air quality, researchers say.
"In partnership with NIEHS, EPA funded this research advancing our understanding of air pollution and health effects," said Dan Costa, ScD, DABT, Interim National Program Director for Air Climate & Energy Research in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Research and Development Research.
"In 2009, EPA published an Integrated Science Assessment concluding a causal relationship exists between PM2.5 and cardiovascular impacts, including strokes. Dr. Wellenius and colleagues' study is the first to show that the onset of stroke can occur with less than a day's exposure to fine PM. Highly relevant research such as this informs the PM2.5 standards and protects human health."
Researchers estimate reducing PM2.5 pollution by about 20 percent could have prevented 6,100 of the 184,000 stroke hospitalizations in the northeastern United States in 2007.
While researchers acknowledge results need to be replicated in other cities, they note that Boston is considered to have relatively clean air.
"The levels of PM2.5 in Boston are lower than those seen in many in other parts of the country, yet we still find that within these moderate levels the risk of stroke is higher on days with more particles in the air," Mittleman says.

PT Pertamina (Persero) continues to increase national LPG supply level, which now is at the 11.4-day level.
In overall, the LPG stock level in all regions is still in secure condition.
The national stock at the level of 11.4-day is relatively sufficient to prevent any disruption to LPG stock and distribution.
?Usually with the stock at 11-day to 15-day level, supply and distribution do not face any disruption. We have also prepared anticipative steps to minimize any obstacle in supply and distribution of national LPG,? Vice President Corporate Communication of Pertamina Mochamad Harun said.
The LPG stock level at Pangkalan Susu Depot on Friday, in overall, was in secure level after the Depot received 2,600 MT LPG, shipped by Patra II and Patra III Gas Carrier Ship on Friday.
?The operation of Pangkalan Susu STS on 26 February 2012 will further strengthen LPG stock,? Harun said.
LPG stock at Tanjung Priok Depot is at 5,059 MT level and the Depot will receive additional 2,500 MT imported LPG, which will arrive on 14 February. On the same day, Eratan Ship carrying 8,000 MT LPG will dock at the Depot. As such, the stock security will further increase.
The stock sufficiency at JBB Ancol LPG Terminal will receive support from Tanjung Priok and Eretan Depot, while waiting for additional 2,500 MT supply to be delivered on 14 February. Currently the LPG stock level at JBB Ancol Terminal is at 1,658 MT.
Eretan Terminal received 7,000 MT additional LPG stock Friday. The supply was carried by Widuri Ship to add to current LPG stock at 1,902 MT level.
Regarding the condition at eastern Indonesia, the LPG stock at Semarang CPO Terminal is at 1,199 MT level. As such, the supply to areas serviced by Semarang CPO Terminal will be supported from Balongan, Eretan and Tanjung Priok. Besides, additional 7,000 MT LPG supply is scheduled to arrive on 12 February.
Meanwhile, LPG stock at Tanjung Perak Depot is at relatively safe position of 3,978 MT. Tanjung Perak will receive 4,500 MT LPG supply today and 3,500 MT tomorrow. Subsequently, stock will be sufficiently supplied from Kalbut, Situbondo, which only requires a few hours.
The LPG stock at Gresik MEM Terminal on 10 February was at 2,312 MT level and is sufficient for the next 3 days. Additional 3,500 MT supply is predicted to arrive on 14 February.

9 die in Kosovo avalanche; child survives (AP)
RESTELICA, Kosovo ? Rescuers have pulled a 5-year-old girl alive from the rubble of a house flattened by a massive avalanche that killed both of her parents and at least seven of her relatives in a remote mountain village in southern Kosovo.
Col. Shemsi Syla, a spokesman for the Kosovo Security Force, said the girl was discovered in the ruins, buried under 10 meters (33 feet) of snow, when officers heard her voice and the ringing of a cell phone. Rescuers cheered in delight and pumped their fists in the air as the girl emerged alive.
A video aired on Klan Kosova TV showed rescuers from the Kosovo Security Force and villagers covering the girl with blankets before rushing her from the remote village to the hospital.
Osman Qerreti, an emergency official at the site, told The Associated Press that at least nine members of one family died in the avalanche that hit the village of Restelica near Kosovo's border with Macedonia and Albania Saturday, destroying seven houses of which only two were inhabited.
Amid subfreezing temperatures Sunday, local villagers used shovels to dig deep into the snow-covered rubble ? all that remained of two one-story brick houses that housed the Reka family. One more person is believed missing.
"No bigger tragedy has ever struck this region," said local district official Behar Ramadani. "Two brothers with their wives and children have been killed."
The girl, identified as Ansera Reka, was recovering in hospital in the nearby town of Prizren where doctors said her life was not in danger. They said she lost both her father and mother in the avalanche and had been buried for more than 10 hours.
NATO peacekeepers, deployed in Kosovo to end the armed conflict between Serbs and Kosovo Albanians in 1999, had been called in to help local authorities in the rescue operation, but were unable to land a helicopter in the blizzard.
The rescuers initially dug out the bodies of a married couple and their 17-year-old son. Six more bodies were discovered during the overnight and Sunday excavation.
The cold snap in Europe, which began in late January, has killed hundreds of people ? most of them homeless. Heavy snow has been blanketing the Balkans for more than two weeks, with Restelica and roads in the region blocked for several days.
In neighboring Montenegro, where the government introduced a state of emergency because of the deep freeze, special police forces on Sunday managed to reach about 50 train passengers stranded after tracks were blocked by avalanches for two days.
Police said a 55-year-old passenger had died from a heart attack Saturday night, while the other passengers were sheltering in a nearby tunnel waiting for evacuation.
The airport in Podgorica remained closed Sunday and the streets were blocked by snow that has reached 57 centimeters (22 inches) ? the highest since measurements started in the capital in 1949.
Authorities have banned driving in the capital, while many parked cars were damaged after snow-covered trees fell on them.
In Serbia, the heavy snow continued to fall Sunday as some 50,000 people remained stranded in snowbound remote areas, some without electricity.
The Albanian government is expected to declare a state of emergency in the north and south of the country, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said.
Much of Italy's north-central east was digging out Sunday after heavy snowfall collapsed roofs onto barnyard animals, closed roads and wreaked havoc with air transport.
Twenty horses were killed when the roof collapsed on a barn housing them in Badia Tedalda, one of the central Tuscan towns hardest hit by the snow, the ANSA news agency reported, citing Mayor Fabrizio Giovannini. Elsewhere, in le Marche regional civil protection crews reported thousands of cows, pigs and other farm animals killed by fallen roofs.
In Rome, the sun shone and whatever snow remained from Saturday's blizzard ? the second in as many weeks ? melted away. But Mayor Gianni Alemanno kept a ban in place on motorcycles in the city center, where some streets remained icy.
In Russia, 20,000 amateur and professional cross-country skiers in Yakhroma, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Moscow, were undeterred by temperatures of minus 23 degrees Celsius (minus 9 Fahrenheit. They raced for five kilometers (about three miles)as part of a mass skiing competition held across the country every year.

In 2002, John Common's estranged third wife was dying of breast cancer. She pinned her hopes for survival on a radical stem-cell-transplant surgery.
Weeks before the planned operation, Janice Common discovered that her husband had allowed her health-insurance policy to lapse.
The move violated a court order to pay for Janice's spousal maintenance and health care, and Seattle lawyer Jerry Kimball said he asked the court to jail Common for contempt.
"He is a one-man wrecking crew," said Kimball, who represented Janice in her divorce case.
Court records show Common blamed his inability to pay on a separate lawsuit filed against him in federal court.
He also told the court that his wife had jewelry and furnishings that could be sold.
Common's background, pieced together from computer record searches, court documents and more than a dozen interviews, shows that he is 54, has been married four times and has eight children, including an adopted daughter.
Records show that he owes about $52,000 in past-due child-support payments in the state of Washington, where officials have tried unsuccessfully to garnishee his wages since 2007. They also sought to suspend his driver's license in 2009 for failure to pay.
He owes millions of dollars in unpaid court judgments, and thousands of dollars in state and federal tax liens have been filed, with no record of payment, records show.
Birth records and interviews show that Common was born in Colorado in 1957 to Iranian parents. Common's birth name was Anush Sharifi Hosseini. In the 1960s, his parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Europe.
Common took the name of his adopted British father, John Common Sr., who moved the family to England.
Common refused to discuss his past. But relatives say that trouble in England caused Common to move in the late 1960s to to Tehran, Iran, where he prospered in the burgeoning radio and television industry.
"He was a wonderful young man," said his first wife, Shirin Nassehi, who met and married Common in Iran. "He was well-known on IRT TV (Iran Radio Television)."
Nassehi, who now works as a real-estate agent in Dallas, said her husband was a hero during the Islamic Revolution in the late 1970s, putting himself in danger by helping Americans to escape the country.
Nassehi said she and her husband fled the country and moved to Seattle. She said Common immediately got work as a disc jockey at a small radio station there.
Common soon set his sights on advertising, Nassehi said. It wasn't long before he was putting together his own deals and talking about running his own business.
Common's breakthrough involved setting up call-center operations employing hundreds to market car warranties to customers throughout the country.
His marriage to Nassehi ended in divorce in the early 1980s.
In 1985, shortly after marrying his second wife, Common was convicted on burglary charges stemming from a domestic issue and sentenced to probation and community service.
The conviction marked the beginning of a string of offenses, including failure to appear in court, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and contempt-of-court charges.
In 2002, a Seattle family-court commissioner, Kimberly Prochnau, described how Common failed to pay for his dying third wife's health-insurance premiums, while affording himself luxurious meals, trips and personal purchases. Prochnau jailed him for contempt.
Court records show Common blamed his inability to pay his spousal support on the federal-court lawsuit. The suit, brought by American International Group, claimed that Common used money from a $30 million line of credit, which was supposed to back car warranties sold through his company, on lavish personal expenses.
Common told Prochnau that his company, Warranty USA, had been placed in receivership and that the federal judge in the case prohibited him from spending company money.
Prochnau cited purchases that contradicted both federal and state court orders. Those purchases included a new home in Nevada and $87,000 on furniture.
The judge in the federal case also held Common in contempt for continuing to spend company money on personal purchases after being ordered to stop.
Common refused to discuss the cases with The Republic.
Court records and an interview with his fourth ex-wife, Elizabeth Muelhaupt, indicate Common was attempting to set up a new life for himself in Nevada even as he drove the Seattle company into bankruptcy.
Muelhaupt said she was already living in Nevada in 2002 and remembers the day John called and told her that he had been jailed in the family-court case.
"He told me to start selling furniture to raise money. That night I called an auction company, and by that weekend they had sold everything in our house," she said.
After a brief stay, Common was released from jail after the furniture was sold, Muelhaupt said.
The money from the sale was supposed to help pay for Janice's breast-cancer treatment, court records show.
But according to Kimball, ultimately it was AIG that stepped in to help Janice get treatment. Even as the company sued her husband, it released its claim on funds to help raise the $60,000 needed to pay for Janice's stem-cell operation.
Janice died in 2002, facing multiple debts and lawsuits related to her husband's business, Kimball said. Her death came just days before the divorce was to be finalized by the court.
